PE offer — Post reference check waiting too long

Hey monkeys. Wanna get some perspectives on my weird situation.

A firm that that really liked me and sped up their interview process with me (they were doing second rounds) and give me a super day over a week ago (I had a competing offer then).

Then right after super day, they asked to check reference which I provided. They spend a few days giving all the reference calls and it’s been three days and the firm said they are circling up to make a decision. I had gotten an offer from the same references so references quality can’t be that bad.

I feel like 3-4 days is a long time to make decisions given I have timing pressure… do we know what could be causing this? Are they trying to drag it out so see how other candidates are doing? It really sucks to be in this position

Hey OP, sorry about the situation, I have been in similar ones before and spend most of the day sweating bullets and pacing around uncontrollably, especially when its an offer I really want.

In short, it is next to impossible to opine accurately on what is causing the delay, so you and I shouldn't even bother trying to figure it out. You confirmed the references is are good, so my hunch is that it is one of three things:

1. Other Candidate Superdays: They want to give some of the other candidates superdays so they feel as though they gave everyone a fair shake and actually selected the best candidate. They know you're good at this point, but everyone always wants to ensure they select the best when hiring.

2. Tied Up: They are super busy. Contrary to what the hiring cycle may indicate, many funds are super busy right now. I just had a new guy join our team coming from PE because the hours were just horrendous. I don't know your fund's employee count or AUM, but it is very possible they just haven't had a chance to sync up.

3. Spring break: Even PE partners need to drag their kids to Orlando to check out Disney World (Land?), and this is the week many folks do it. I cannot tell you how much of my senior mgmt. is OOO. There is a non-zero chance that due to spring break schedules of more senior team members, they just cant sync up on discussing your superday

If I were you, I would focus on what you can control. As much as possible, dig into work, your relationship, the gym, video games, catching up with friends, anything you can to get your mind off the current situation. If you are like me, nothing will actually distract you, but this may help momentarily distract you, which is all you can hope for in these situations.

Best of luck OP, hang tight

I wouldn’t overthink. The team is probably very busy and like others mentioned this is within the spring break season. Be patient they’ll get back to you don’t worry.

OP here. Def overthinking lol. I ended up getting the offer which is awesome! They just needed a few more days to make a decision! Although I don't like that they only give me 24 hours to think about it :(
