PE Operations Associate Roles

A few questions:

  • What does comp look like for an entry-level role right out of college? Are bonuses (if any) attracted to portco performance / exits?

  • Is it possible to get an operations associate role right out of college with no IB experience?

  • What does career progression in a role like this look like? Track to C-Suite at a PE-backed portfolio company? Also, is there even a possibility of switching from operations to a deal team sometime during your career (not that it matters, just wondering)?

Also, wondering what recruiting for these roles looks like? Just networking / talking to recruiters / headhunters? Any formal application process? Wondering if it differs at all from the recruiting process for a traditional PE (deal team) associate.

Any insight is appreciated

Compensation for Entry-Level Roles

  • Compensation: Entry-level compensation for PE Operations Associates right out of college can vary widely depending on the firm and location. Generally, it includes a base salary and potential bonuses.
  • Bonuses: Bonuses may be tied to the performance of the portfolio companies (portcos) and exits, but this can vary by firm.

Entry-Level Opportunities Without IB Experience

  • Possibility: It is possible to secure an operations associate role right out of college without investment banking (IB) experience, though it may be challenging. Firms may look for candidates with strong analytical skills, relevant internships, or a background in consulting or corporate finance.

Career Progression

  • Career Path: The career progression for an operations associate can lead to senior operational roles within portfolio companies, potentially reaching the C-Suite level.
  • Switching to Deal Team: Transitioning from an operations role to a deal team is possible but not common. It typically requires demonstrating strong financial and deal-making skills.

Recruiting Process

  • Recruiting Methods: Recruiting for operations roles often involves networking, talking to recruiters, and headhunters. There may also be formal application processes, but networking is crucial.
  • Differences from Deal Team Recruiting: The process may differ slightly from traditional PE associate recruiting, which often focuses more on candidates with IB or consulting backgrounds.
