Possible PE Internship

Hey Guys, I'm currently a freshman in college interested in finding an internship next summer. I have connections with someone high up at a PE firm, and was wondering if it's possible for them to take me under their wing this summer. I noticed that PE is mostly for MBA, so is this even a possibility? And if so, how long should I ask for the duration?

Thanks

Email your contact asking to talk w/ him about his experience and background, and any advice he might have on breaking into finance.

During the call he will probably ask what your plans are for the summer- at this point you should mention that you want to gain experience in finance. If he's interested in giving you an internship for the summer, he'll mention it.

There are a lot of small PE funds who could use a freshman's help around the office, but you most likely won't be touching any models; probably working on compiling databases for sourcing, finding emails/phone numbers, or other admin type stuff. However, having a PE name on your resume especially as a freshman will open doors for your next summer.

Short answer: Doesn't hurt to try, but don't get too excited. If it doesn't work out, getting an internship at a local boutique is ideal. After that, anything finance related, i.e. PWM, will put you ahead of your competition.

Don't stress too much now, you're only a freshman.

I agree with above post from IPB. I am a firm believer of paving your own road and not going down the "typical" path. Just be confident in yourself.

Agreed with the above. To add, if he's not going to bring you on for an internship ask if he knows any other funds that could or bankers he can introduce you to who may. Bankers will go out of their way for PE guys because we're clients so if this is a case where your uncle's an md at a fund, there's a good chance a banker could bring you on as an intern (more likely a boutique than the big ones that have formal internships and are strict about things like that).
