Rank The Prestige: Investment Banking, Private Equity (LBO), Growth Equity, Private Credit, Consulting, Real Estate

If I had to guess it's probably:

  • Investment Banking
  • Private Equity (LBO)
  • Growth Equity
  • Consulting
  • Private Credit
  • Real Estate

Remember that it's not just about comp but also about name recognition. No one knows what Private Equity is but hwen you say "investment banking" they go "ohhhhhhh so you must be smart". Private credit is even worse that way.

1. private equity 2. growth equity 3. all the rest, kinda interchangeable depending on what you think. And this is an intra-finance perspective. The name rec thing is overrated, no one in the real world cares if you work at "citi"

Rankings depend on how well-known / respected / quality of returns are between the PE and GE firm, but would agree PE and GE 1 and 2 in this list. Would place some GE firms above PE and vice versa. Many GEs actually care more about pedigree than some PEs, so it also depends on how you define prestige

This is true. If you say you work at a hedge fund, everyone assumes you’re rich and/or elite even if you’re just an average / poor analyst lol.
