Re/insurance Groups at PE Firms & Insurers Interview

Interviewing at a reinsurance team at a major PE fund's insurance arm (think Athene Apollo / Global Atlantic KKR). I am not sure how to prepared for the interview, especially on the technical side.

I would really appreciate some advice on how to best prep - can provide more info if needed too.

When preparing for an interview with a reinsurance team at a major PE fund's insurance arm, here’s how you can structure your preparation based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Understand the Reinsurance and Insurance Landscape

  • Market Knowledge: Be well-versed in the reinsurance and insurance industry. Research current trends, macroeconomic factors, and how they impact the sector. For example:
    • Interest rate environments and their effect on insurance portfolios.
    • Regulatory changes affecting reinsurance and insurance companies.
    • Key players in the market and their strategies.
  • Business Model: Understand how reinsurance works, including risk transfer, underwriting, and capital management. Be ready to discuss how reinsurance differs from traditional insurance.

2. Technical Preparation

  • Valuation Techniques: Be prepared to discuss valuation methods specific to insurance companies, such as:
    • Embedded Value (EV) and Adjusted Book Value (ABV).
    • Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) with a focus on insurance cash flows.
    • Multiples-based valuation (e.g., Price-to-Book, Price-to-Earnings).
  • Key Metrics: Familiarize yourself with insurance-specific metrics like:
    • Combined Ratio.
    • Loss Ratio and Expense Ratio.
    • Return on Equity (ROE) and Solvency Ratios.
  • Investment Portfolio: Understand how insurers manage their investment portfolios, including asset-liability matching and the role of fixed-income securities.

3. Private Equity Angle

  • LBO Modeling: Since you’re interviewing at a PE fund, expect questions on LBO modeling. Focus on how insurance cash flows and liabilities impact leverage and returns.
  • Capital Efficiency: Be ready to discuss how PE firms optimize capital structures in insurance acquisitions, including the use of reinsurance to free up capital.
  • Exit Strategies: Understand how PE firms create value in insurance/reinsurance deals and potential exit strategies (e.g., IPO, strategic sale).

4. Behavioral and Fit Questions

  • Why Reinsurance/Insurance?: Be prepared to articulate why you’re interested in this niche within private equity. Highlight your understanding of the sector and its unique challenges.
  • Deal Experience: If you have prior deal experience, tailor your stories to emphasize skills relevant to insurance (e.g., financial modeling, risk assessment, or regulatory understanding).

5. Case Studies and Practical Scenarios

  • Case Studies: You might be given a case study to evaluate an insurance company or reinsurance portfolio. Practice analyzing financial statements, identifying risks, and proposing strategies to improve profitability.
  • Scenario Questions: Be ready for questions like:
    • "How would you evaluate the acquisition of a reinsurance company?"
    • "What factors would you consider when pricing a reinsurance contract?"

6. Networking and Insights

  • Leverage Your Network: Reach out to professionals in the reinsurance or insurance PE space for insights. They can provide valuable tips on what to expect in the interview.
  • Mock Interviews: Practice with mentors or peers who have experience in PE or insurance.

Additional Resources

  • WSO Threads: Explore threads on private equity interviews and insurance-specific discussions for more insights.
  • Industry Reports: Read reports from firms like Aon, Swiss Re, or Moody’s to stay updated on the reinsurance market.

By combining technical preparation, industry knowledge, and a strong understanding of private equity strategies, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle the interview. Good luck—knock it out of the park! 🐒
