Top Tier Tech Firms
Looking at full time recruiting for PE firms, just wanted to get an idea of the top PE firms for tech and if there's a tier list.
Am familiar with the top shops on the street, so more insight in terms of rankings of best to worst would be helpful.
Very arbitrary and just my opinion:
T1: Thoma/Vista/SLP
T1.5: FP/TA
T2: KKR Menlo/Genstar/Hg
T3: Permira/PSG/TPG
But tbh outside of the top 5, any MF that does software (so all of them) is up there.
Where does Carlyle and WP fall within your tiers?
I left WP off because they’re mainly known for their growth investing although they still do buyout. Definitely reputable and you’re splitting hairs between WP and other firms in 1.5-2 range.
I have a friend at Carlyle doing tech and they’re definitely strong but tech isn’t their main focus/selling point. Still without a doubt a strong group with a huge platform, can’t go wrong with either one

Only firm missing that is absolutely in Tier 1 is H&F.
TB, Vista, and H&F will be on every single software mandate on the block.
Bump - how have these tech funds done post-COVID? Which showed the best discipline when valuations were sky-high in 2021 and are now surviving the pullback as a result?
