$50,000 analyst REPE NYC

Hey

Got an offer for an acquisition analyst position at a small REPE in NYC at $50k a year.

Have a master's from a top school and a few years of experience, I'm an international student though.

Tough market, so I haven't secured other offers so far.

I like the job and the team but I never heard of salaries that low.

What would you think of that ? Or what would you do ?

Where do you live now?

You might actually lose money by moving to NY and taking this job.

in NYC since I was studying here. I live at my family's so I don't pay rent at least but agreed

Yeah this is a pretty big red flag, unfortunately. If they don’t value your time enough to pay you accordingly - what else will they not value while you’re there?

In NYC, $50,000 is how much jobs with no education requirement pay. Take a look at hiring ads for Chick-fil-a, shake shack, etc in NYC. The hourly pay is like $20-$25/hour, annualized, this is approx $50k. You'll have a difficult time making ends meet and need to have a lot of roommates and live super far away. I would counter at $70k. Otherwise, like the other commenter said, you may go into debt living in NYC on this salary...

Lmao at people here saying to take it because money is better than no money. Sure, but not when you’ll be working like a dog which they likely will given how 99% of NYC operate, especially a small one. Not even to mention the cost of living in NYC. Also, I laugh when people say “Just take the job and work on finding something else!” Do people not realize how stressful and time consuming it is to search for another job while being employed?

A Starbucks barista probably makes more than this when factoring the amount of hours you’ll work.

The people on here telling OP to take it are saying it not because of money but because they know how it is to be internationals who have been fucked multiple times.
You only have a 90 day unemployment grace period.

Sometimes, if your work permit comes later than your start date, you lose the job. Sometimes, offers get pulled for the fun of it.

It’s easy to talk all high when you were born in the country and don’t have to return to a war torn shit-show with nothing to show for your investment.

You’re in a unique position given you say you don’t have any housing costs. Personally if I were in your position, I’d take it. If the pay is that low it should be good WLB which should allow you to interview outside of your working hours. I’m in NYC, the job market is brutal and highly competitive right now. You may not get another offer for several months.

I'm an American expat working in the Netherlands - where my employment determines whether I can stay in the country or not. Since you're an international student, I am assuming you will need a work visa to stay in the states. Is this company offering to sponsor your work visa? It's hard (in any country) to find an employer willing to pay and sponsor your work visa especially when there's a lot of other candiadates that don't need this requirement. Please don't listen to the other comments saying to ditch the offer as you can work as a barista and make more $$ because a random cafe doesn't and can't qualify for work sponsorship. Take the offer and try to get a better paying position when you're able to and it's best to be upfront when interviewing that you need sponsorship! Best of luck.

Market for acq analyst is 120ish all in - that’s adjusted for COL across HCOL/MCOL/LCOL.

Ensure you’re close to that if you’re actually doing acq. Otherwise, figure out how to justify it to yourself.
