Academic Reading lists for real estate
Hi all, I've seen the real estate must reads thread which is great. However, alot of these books are a whole lot of opinion and story telling of various successes, I have also read(listened on audible) a ton of rich dad poor dad type books maybe 60, but now I want something more of substance, something you have to spend a bit of time on to learn new concepts. I prefer to pick a topic and study it as I dropped out of college, and try to educate myself. for EG, I found an old harvard business school reading list and currently studying a cost accounting textbook.
What are your top academic books? we're talking textbooks, nitty-gritty type books, ones which focus on a topic and you can get stuck into, more of a textbook study material than a bedtime reader.
Hopefully, we can compile a list similar to a top college reading materials list of the books you need to buy for the year to help myself and others who are looking to study or further our knowledge in business, economics and real estate in general.
ill start with 'cost accounting, a managerial emphasis 14th edition' its literally a textbook but I'm learning a ton as if I'm in a classroom and want to continue on this path for when I finish it by finding another topic that is relevant ideally a real estate finance, development or deals analysis type book.
My favorite, and one that is often assigned in real estate courses, is "Commercial Real Estate Analysis and Investments" by Geltner, Miller, Clayton, and Eichholtz. This covers topics such as real estate economics, finance, development, portfolio theory and a bit on leasing.
Additional non-textbook recommendations: "The Real Estate Game" by William Poorvu and "What every real estate investor needs to know about Cash Flow" by Frank Gallinelli.
thanks! added to my reading list, the textbooks are exactly what I'm looking for. Out of curiosity how is a book like this used in schools, will the whole entire contents of the book be taught in classes step by step? or do they take little parts from each as more of a reference
There is too much information in the book to cover all of it over the course of a semester. It's mostly used as "a chapter here and a chapter there" for reading assignments related to the topics covered in the class.
One of the most recommended books I have received on the academic side of the spectrum for real estate is Peter Linneman's "Real Estate Finance & Investments: Risks and Opportunities".
Thanks! I like the look of it just ordered it from amazon
DiPasquale & Wheaton's Urban Economics and Real Estate Markets.
https://www.amazon.com/Urban-Economics-Real-Estate-Markets/dp/0132252449
To say that it's not light reading would be putting it mildly, but there is a ton of useful information in there if you can master it.
This sounds like an incredible read. May have to add to my list
Real Estate Finance and Investments
"Making it in Real Estate : Starting out as a Developer" by John McNellis "Real Estate Investment and Acquisition Workbook" by Howard Zuckerman "Professional Real Estate Development : The ULI Guide to the Business" by Peiser & Hamilton
"The Art of The Deal" by Donald Trump, a good book for investment guys.
“Real Estate Finance & Investments: Risks and Opportunities” by Peter Linneman
