Best Online Resources for Real Estate (Substacks, Podcasts, Youtube)

I know this topic comes up from time to time, but I’d love a refresh—especially with the recent explosion of Substacks, podcasts, and YouTube channels covering a wide range of topics, including real estate.

I’m less interested in content focused on learning the fundamentals of the business and more interested in deep dives into current events, market structure, and industry trends.

A few that I’ve found interesting lately:

  • The Promote (https://ten31.beehiiv.com/) – Hitem (who’s active on WSO) does a great job analyzing CRE current events in depth.
  • Lewis Enterprises (https://www.lewisenterprises.blog/) – Hunter (last name escapes me) provides deep insights into market structure, public real estate investing, and major transactions (e.g., Blackstone’s purchase of AIR Communities).
  • Walker & Dunlop Podcast – The quality of guests varies, but when they’re good, the conversations are always worth a listen.

Curious to hear what other valuable content people are following!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some excellent online resources for real estate enthusiasts looking for deep dives into current events, market structures, and industry trends:

  1. Podcasts:

    • Behind the Bricks: Offers insights into the realities of the real estate industry with interesting guests.
    • Leading Voices in Real Estate: Features interviews with key players in the industry, providing valuable perspectives.
    • Walker & Dunlop Podcast: As you mentioned, the quality of guests can vary, but the good episodes are highly insightful.
    • Fifth Wall Podcast: Includes interviews with portfolio companies and LPs, offering a unique angle on the industry.
  2. YouTube Channels:

    • Investor Archive: A treasure trove of content featuring industry legends like Jon Gray, Sam Zell, Barry Sternlicht, and others. It also includes insights from finance greats like Howard Marks and Ray Dalio, which can be applied to real estate.
    • Urban Land Institute: Offers valuable talks, including those with John McNellis, which provide color on development and market trends.
  3. Websites and Blogs:

    • The Real Deal: A go-to source for real estate news and analysis.
    • Bisnow: Covers a wide range of real estate topics with a focus on commercial real estate.
    • Urbanize LA: Great for those interested in the Los Angeles market.
    • Lewis Enterprises Blog: As you mentioned, Hunter provides excellent insights into market structure and major transactions.
    • The Promote: Hitem’s analysis of CRE current events is highly regarded.
  4. Books (for additional depth):

    • Other People’s Money by Bagli: A well-informed book that dives into significant real estate finance events like Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village.
    • The Real Estate Game: A foundational book for understanding the industry.
  5. Additional Recommendations:

    • Wharton Papers: Offers academic insights into real estate and capital markets.
    • Financial Samurai Blog: While not exclusively real estate-focused, it provides valuable financial insights, including real estate.

These resources should provide a well-rounded view of the industry, from current events to in-depth market analysis. Let me know if you'd like more tailored suggestions!

X (Twitter)- follow as many people as you can- replace passive scrolling on instagram, TikTok etc with passive learning. Low stakes way of soaking up deal flow/knowledge.

Appreciate the shout-out! Hunter is a friend and a contributor to The Promote so it's especially nice to see him alongside us here.

Couple more things I'd add

1) For broad primers on specific parts of the market, highly recommend the following Odd Lots episodes

Institutional Multifamily w/ Cortland's Lee Everett:
Kicking the can in CRE w Cohen & Steers Rich Hill
The Ultra-Luxury Parallel Universe with yours truly
2) For a wonkier look at emerging business models in CRE I enjoy Brad Hargreaves' Thesis Driven
3) RETwit used to be GREAT but has definitely lost its mojo. There are a few accounts still worth checking out, but the algo is no longer kind.

4) We're launching a weekly 25m podcast for The Promote in late Q1 - it'll be me and an ex-institutional guy co-hosting. Stay tuned for that- short and spicy CRE nuggets
