MBA to MSRE?

I got an MBA from a T20 program and have been working on the buy side (public equities) for a couple of years now and have really enjoyed learning about and covering REITs, home builders, etc. I am interested in getting more into the weeds on RE and have been looking into Development/Asset Management roles but I am not sure if my current experience would be up to snuff for a real REPE/RE Asset Manager. I have looked into some MSRE programs like Wisconsin and think I could probably get in and recruit from there but I would rather not lose a year of comp, if possible. Has anyone seen/accomplished a similar jump across the aisle or is a formal program the best way to go about this and are there any Wisconsin grads that would care to share how recruiting is (on/off campus, types of firms, etc. - Disclaimer, I am hoping to stay in the Midwest).

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your situation:

  1. Transition from MBA to MSRE:

    • Experience Relevance: Your background in public equities, especially covering REITs and home builders, is valuable. However, transitioning to a more specialized role in Development/Asset Management might require additional specific real estate knowledge and experience.
    • MSRE Programs: Programs like the one at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are well-regarded, especially in the Midwest. The new 9-month MSRE program at UW Madison is designed to provide in-depth real estate education and could be a good fit for your goals.
  2. Recruiting and Career Prospects:

    • On/Off Campus Recruiting: According to previous WSO threads, the recruiting process can vary. Some firms have formalized recruitment processes, especially larger REPE firms, while others, like development firms, may have more informal processes.
    • Types of Firms: UW Madison has a strong alumni network in the Midwest, with many graduates in senior positions at various firms. This network can be beneficial for job placements in the region.
    • Midwest Focus: If you aim to stay in the Midwest, UW Madison's program is highly regarded in that region, particularly for cities like Chicago, Minneapolis, and within Wisconsin.
  3. Alternative Pathways:

    • Without Formal Program: If you prefer not to lose a year of compensation, consider leveraging your current network and experience to transition directly. Networking with professionals in the field, attending industry events, and seeking mentorship from those in Development/Asset Management roles can be effective.
    • MBA vs. MSRE: Some discussions on WSO suggest that an MBA might offer broader career options and a more established network compared to an MSRE. However, the MSRE provides specialized knowledge that could be crucial for your desired roles.
  4. Wisconsin Alumni Insights:

    • Recruitment Experience: While specific details on recruitment from Wisconsin's MSRE program are not extensively covered, the program's reputation and alumni network suggest strong support for job placements. Engaging with current students and alumni can provide more personalized insights.

In summary, while an MSRE from a reputable program like UW Madison can provide specialized knowledge and a strong network, you might also explore direct transition options through networking and leveraging your current experience. If you decide to pursue the MSRE, the program's focus on the Midwest aligns well with your regional preference.
