Slate asset management info
Hey everyone.
Just looking to get some more information on Slate asset management. heard they top tier in Canada and are looking to expand beyond by the looks of their recent deals and website - any info about culture, how interesting the mandates they work on are from those who have worked with/for them in the past?
Thanks.

I hope those threads give you a bit more insight.
Well those recommended topics aren't a good sign.
They are looking to expand their operations in Europe so they were looking for an inaugural analyst. As a result, there was not structured analyst programme, like that you would find at the big brokerages, REPE or AM shops. Instead you were really just learning from those around you. Also being the 1st cohort of the analyst programme, you had a lot of autonomy in how you wanted to structure your learning.
They look for deals across the risk-spectrum, but focus on core-plus and value add opportunities. In terms of culture, I do not know a huge amount, but many I spoke to were ex-IB types from Canadian banks.
They have a structured analyst program in Canada, and actually also offer a rotational program for recent grads rotating between investments, asset management and credit.
Other than that you nailed it. In terms of culture, very traditional finance from those I've spoken to. It's a sweatshop culture, brutal hours for decent pay, but they work on a lot of interesting deals and are scaling crazy fast.
cool.. I just had an interview with them for a position in europe. The way you described was exactly my impression. But I have the feeling that the do not attract the best talent. Am I wrong about that? I just checked on LinkedIn and they have many analyst who did not even interned anywhere kind of.
Interviewed with them in the past. Culturally they’re a little fratty and love their beer. Work life balance is a hit or miss with them on these forums. Some say work life balance is good rest say it’s bad. I would lean towards a sweaty culture as their teams are very very lean, and they poached that “entrepreneurial culture where you wear multiple hats”. PS, anytime you hear anything like that it basically means that the company doesn’t want to hire more positions for the responsibilities so you’ll get the burden of extra responsibilities without being paid for it.
On the positives here, they are growing very fast, management seems to be competent, they have diverse businesses within the company including public securities, so if you don’t like working on asset level work you can move towards company level platforms which I think is really good because it allows for inter company lateraling to different opportunities versus leaving all together.
If there is an opportunity open I would apply, seems like a good place.
One of their development deals in Vancouver blew up very publicly, probably not a great place to start if your looking for a job on the development side.
Hahah I was going to say this but held back - there are a number of other development deals they're in way over their heads on across the country. Great investors, not great developers and have strayed from their lane a bit.
Have also heard their MD of development is an asshat.
What are they like for PE?
Anyone know what comp is like?
