VP/Director Interviews

Few questions for those who fall in this bucket.

1) Are the same recruiters who handle a lot of the associate level recruiting also handling VP+ recruiting?

2) Is the VP job market still frozen? Haven’t seen a single role posted or reached out to by any HH’s although I’ve worked at a very well known fund during associate and senior associate years

3) How tough are these interviews compared to associate / senior associate interviews. Multiple rounds, mental technicals, presentations?

1) Based on the most helpful WSO content, recruiters handling associate-level recruiting often do not handle VP+ recruiting. VP and Director roles are typically filled through more targeted searches, often relying on internal promotions or highly specialized headhunters. The process is less structured compared to associate-level recruiting, and firms may prefer to promote internally rather than hire externally for these roles.

2) The VP job market is indeed challenging. As highlighted in WSO threads like "We don't hire VPs," many firms prefer to promote from within rather than hire laterally for VP roles. This is because VPs are expected to transition from analytical roles to sourcing and fundraising, which is a difficult leap for many. Additionally, the market for VP roles is often limited, with fewer openings compared to associate-level positions.

3) VP/Director interviews are generally more rigorous than associate/senior associate interviews. They often include multiple rounds, with a focus on leadership, deal experience, and the ability to source and manage relationships. Presentations, case studies, and in-depth discussions about past deals are common. The technical aspect may still be present but is often less emphasized compared to the ability to demonstrate strategic thinking and leadership skills.
