Equity Research, Toronto - Please Critique My Resume
Hello everyone,
I just finished writing my resume. I am trying to break into Equity Research (particularly in mining) in Toronto. I created this thread to ask if you could look over my resume and give me feedback. I understand most of you have busy schedules, so any type of criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Not a critique on your resume per se but what's with all the Southern US focus? Are you a Canadian Citizen who studied in the US? Not uncommon for people to have "Homecomings", where Canadians study and work abroad only to come back to Canada later (was SUPER popular during the financial crisis). However, be ready to answer why you are interested in coming back if that is the case. Also, have a good reason for why ER in mining as the commodities prices aren't great. Especially coming from a REIT/REPE background.
You were only in your last role since October 2015? Why do you want to move so soon?
I'd remove internships from your undergrad. Your FT experience is the only thing that matters now. Similarly for your student activities. I would consider using the space to add more "Airplane Test" material under Additional Information. I'm assuming in your real resume you expand beyond "Urban Development". If you are associated with organizations outside of work, I would include that.
I'd tighten up your language a bit. I'd remove the "Highly" from "Highly proficient" in the first bullet of your Additional Info.

I should clarify that the positions on my resume are freelance journalism/research. So I did all this work in Toronto. I was told by the employers to state New York, NY on my resume despite it being freelance work, and in interviews to explain that. What are your thoughts on this?
I was in my last role since August 2014. You must have read it wrong.
Can you give me examples of interests that would pass the Airplane Test. I really thought "music production" would be attractive and pass that test. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bad time to be in mining.
I understand that, but it is a field that I really enjoy learning and reading about. I initially did research and writing on technology stocks (ex: Apple, Samsung, Lenovo) until I met a banker who asked me to do research for him on Barrick Gold which he owned in his portfolio. Since then, I got hooked. It's such a dynamic industry, and so many catalysts are involved that could drive the gold price. It's far more interesting than technology, in my view.
You're probably not going to be pulling that many interviews coming in as a "freelancer". It sounds like you have a passion, get in front of someone (network) and show that. If you're genuinely passionate and produce quality research, you'll impress someone.
I get that people always want to sound prolific and "quantify" their achievements in their CVs, but saying you've written 245 articles in 16 months makes me believe none of them is any good.
Your CV is bad. I look at it and see "SeekingAlpha contributor who hasn't been able to get a real job since he graduated over 2 years ago."
Things I'd recommend:
1) You have a major in Econ and a minor in Earth Sciences - can you spin that into a role in finance/corporate development at a mining company? From there you can move to mining ER.
Or:
2) Get an MBA.
Hello, thanks for replying. I am not trying to sound prolific in my resume. What is shown there is what I specifically did. Not trying to over-inflate anything, as the personal below you said. As for the articles, I have received good feedback from readers and at times management at the companies.
But if it does sound like I'm over-inflating things, please suggest me what I could change in the bullet points so my resume avoids that prolific tone.

Oh, I believe you did that. My only point is that it's simply not possible to produce even a fraction of that many articles with any quality. Literally not possible.
listen to mrb87. people that you reach out to will only have time to read one report, max. when they do interview you they will probably just give you a name to look at.

Have you been paid for any of your freelance work?
When I put similar on my CV I had been pulling in a reasonable hourly on some programming projects.
