I'm a sophomore at a target, and just started preparing a preliminary version of my resume for recruiting next semester...I showed my resume to a few upperclassmen, and got mixed reviews. Some say if I apply to banking, the math classes in the education section could get me dinged, because I look like someone who doesn't know what he's applying to etc, and also my work experience isn't really banking related (i'm interning at a fund of funds)...
so I was just wondering : do I "need" another internship which is more IBD related (like ER, boutique IBD etc) in order to get more first round interviews? what are some of the things on my resume that could get me dinged?

Tone down some of the math. Get rid of your SAT II scores. Also, get rid of all your interests (geopolitical, foreign affairs). I would ding you for mentioning anything political on a resume, even if it is general like geopolitical events....when a interviewer is looking at thousands of qualified resumes, why would he or she take the chance? Put down something vague like "international experiences" or "international travel"

Formatting is inconsistent for the second experience. Bring the job titles in line with the company name and get rid of the sub-bullets
List the finance related courses before any math courses.

RE the resume.. Any math beyond +-* is way too much for IBD. Perfect for S&T though.
I'd drop your interests altogether. Nothing against interests in general but avoid anything vaguely political. Billiards doesn't exactly add value either. Your work experience doesn't actually tell me what you achieved so I'd elaborate more on that. eg No one cares if you discussed trade strategies with fund managers.. They will care if those strategies actually generated P&L.

otherwise a very strong resume. I think IBs will want to interview you for sure. given your strong math background, you may want to consider applying for more quant roles as well (hedge funds, etc). it'd be a shame to let your math skills go to waste.
also, OP doesn't go to UT or Rice, if you look at his work experience , 2009-present (note to OP, this experience should not be in the past tense since you are still doing it) you'll see that he is involved in community outreach programs in NYC, so it's either NYU or Columbia, maybe Yale.
I'm willing to bet that the varsity debate experience occurred in high school, so OP is from the Houston Texas area.
also, you may want to add on any sporting/social/recreational (not billiards) activities on your resume to show that you aren't a total social dork.
examples:
university recreational sports sporting/sailing/sports clubs fraternity/sorority
Lose the periods after bullets (which you only have for half anyway). You can't have some job titles bulleted and others not. I would not use sub-bullets.
It should be "freshman class"
"Consumer Discretionary Spending, etc..."
I'd try to add some more details to your activities
Steer clear of bolding in your education section
Only list Excel under technical skills if you can stand up to an impromptu expert-level quiz
Agreed that anything political under interests should go [ie political satire/Bill Maher/Jon Stewart (you really thought that was a good idea?)]. Foreign affairs is probably fine to leave, it's not partisan on its own - geopolitics is an uppity term for a variant on the same theme, so lose the redundancy
thanks for the comments. I was also wondering, considering I still have HS stuff on my resume, do I "need" another internship to replace that space ? If i remove the debate team stuff, that will leave a good 4 lines to fill out if i keep my current font size (10.5). How many internships is it typical for applicants selected for first rounds to have?
Replace AP Scholar with Distinction with something else; you want a pat on the back for taking five APs over four years? You don't need "Advanced Calculus" unless it's stochastic calculus, because it's pretty much implied by the PDE. For banking, all the math stuff is asking for a ding or very unpleasant questioning during interviews.
(Just FYI, I'd redact more; not that hard to figure out who you are from your resume.)
