Resume Feedback (Rip it apart)
Hello,
This is my first post on this forum, so might as well get shat on as much as possible. Any feedback helps
I've been working for GE now for about 1.5 years (Internship & Full time), and basically had enough of corporate finance. Therefore I'm interviewing now with financial services/market related companies since that's what I studied and actually want to do.
I know a lot of people on this forum stick up for corp finance, and although there are some interesting opportunities, it is obviously NOTHING like the "finance" you may be interested in - so be aware. Also depends on the department that you work in. I worked in state tax and controllership which are both accounting functions, but my colleagues who worked in SCM, Pricing, and FP&A had similar responsibilities. I actually did a lot of work with the FP&A and Pricing managers, and I found it very similar to my controllership duties.
I have an upcoming interview with a management consulting company, and another with a commodity trading firm (research).
Below is my resume -

not sure how muhc movemenet you're gonna get coming from your work exp + weak under grad brand. Take yoru GMAT and aim for a top mba program, going to HBS/Stanford will do you good and open doors, they like younger applicants.
Didn't really look too much at the content, but one thing that stuck out to me was that you didn't keep it consistent with "Month, Year" throughout the document.
Couple things:
Format is quite mediocre. Go to the M&I format and do it that way.
You need to keep your dates consistent - "June 2009 - July 2009", for example.
The way you have your GPA listed is weird. Just change it to Major GPA.
capitalize the roman numerals for accounting I and II
Lastly, I find it stunning that you have this much white space and you're a year out of school. Your bullets need tons of work (don't have time to go through them right now) and a lot more development - specifically your current work experience since it is most relevant. In addition, you're gonna have trouble getting anything decent with a mediocre brand on your resume and your current experience. Your best bet is to try to lateral somewhere more interesting at GE, take the GMATs, score 700+, and aim for a top 15 b-school.
Apart from what has been mentioned, your resume is very stale. Positions just list out what the job requirement was.
A good way to stand-out would be to add one bullet right under each role (if possible) stating your "value add". Sometimes it might not be very obvious, but it can include things like revamping internal excel models, how you spotted accounting errors that saved the company $$'s, how you helped on a deal or even how your insight helped your firm/superior from making a bad decision.
It will help you stand out and show the value you added and can add to where you'll go.
I just updated my resume based on the recommendations, still need to work on the State Tax Intern description
For some reason, the extreme whitespace under the dates doesn't sit well with me. It makes your bullets really difficult to read and the entire document as a whole rather juvenile. I would suggest extending the bulleted points further out. Also (someone told me this a long time ago), try right-aligning your locations/dates so they're all nice and uniform along the right margin.
The second update is better, by far.
Any other quantitative measures you could use for your work at Gexpro?
Any thoughts on the size of portfolios you dealt with at UBS?
"Skills, Activities, and Interest" should be changed to "Skills, Activities, and Interests," with labelled bullets for each, viz.:
Skills: Speak-o the Spanish-o Activities: Sports Interests: Booze
how did you get the gig with UBS? Just wondering
There are a ton of financial advisors in the Fairfield County area so a lot of them come to Fairfield U looking for interns. You can probably cold call/e-mail some advisors inquiring if they need help.
