Some help please? college senior trying to get into I-banking

Hey fellow monkeys,

I was hoping I could get some feed back on my resume. I currently attend a non-target and will graduate in march of 2012 by then I should be able to put 3.7 on resume. I did two 6-mo internships in the middle office of a major prop trading firm. and one 6 month internship at a small accounting firm (original career aspirations/family connection) I looking to make the jump to Investment banking.

I am well above average with excel/access usage and VBA programming. I know a little bit of SQL I'm in the process of learning it more in depth.

Just looking for some feed back on things that may look weak or that I should emphasize. or maybe something I should leave out..

Also, if anyone wants to offer me an interview at their bank that would be great too

Also, the top and bottom margins look sort of big but thats a function of the pdf converter I used they look normal in word.

Nothing on there says you have an interest in banking. You'd be in good shape applying for trading jobs, but that's not what you're looking for. I don't know how you should do it, but you definitely have to tailor your resume more for investment banking. They are going to drill you in interviews on why banking after having not 1, but 2 internships in trading. And it's going to be tough to play the "I didn't like trading" card, because you did it twice. I'd suggest a relevant coursework section and adding any clubs where you gained some relevant financial analysis experience.

May I suggest applying for trading jobs, doing it for 2 years and then getting your MBA to lateral to IBD associate? If the trading firm is what I think it is, you should be golden for getting a job at a prop shop.

 

Thanks for the input. Ive recently began doubting if I could succeed in trading, Im very comfortable with financial instruments and above average with math, but i dont have a PhD in math and im not a math major and it seems like those are really the only people who get hired.

An alumni came to our school and talked about private equity and the M&A process and it really got me excited. Eventually I'd like to get into private equity and I see IBD as the gateway. But more than just that Ive looked into it and I like the idea of modeling, I use models a lot in my coursework, you know what they say about economists... we do it with models (ha...) and I feel like my knowledge of excel would set me apart, I know most analysts are pretty good with it but I basically know the ins and outs... Ive used it for pretty much every job function for all three internships. And Im pretty good with coding, however im not sure how much they use that in

Any idea of how I could spin any of that?

Would people looking at resumes know that economics coursework is model intensive, obviously as much as their jobs but relative to other majors.

No sh*t? Is that what they say about economists? You do it with models? Learn something new everyday on this site...

I also had no idea only PhD's in math and math majors got into trading. You should do a sticky FAQ post.
