Engineer that wants to get an MBA and transition into Management Consulting
Hi all,
I am currently a junior at a top 3 public university (think Berkeley, UCLA, UMich) studying Electrical Engineering with a long term goal of getting into consulting (MBB). I unfortunately struck out this year for consulting internships. I will be interning at Intel this summer (engineering) and I was wondering what roles/companies I should look into pre-MBA for next year's full time recruitment (i.e. is intel good enough)? My short term goal is to get into an M7 Business school. I will probably graduate with around a 3.5 and haven't taken the GMAT yet.

Honestly, there are so many consultants applying to business schools, coming from a roll-up your sleeves engineering job allows you to bring a different perspective to an MBA class. The 'safe' path is not always the best or right path.

I encourage you to start preparing for your GMAT (or GRE) this summer and take it while you are still in student mode. The score will be good for 5 years and your ability to perform well on a test will decline pretty quickly after you graduate.

I was once in your position. Came from a solid public school (UVA/UMICH) and had a good GPA (only slightly better than yours)... I failed to secure a consulting summer internship and instead interned at one of the non-faang big tech companies (Intel, IBM, Samsung) as a pre-sales technical architect.
In addition to ensuring good performance at my internship and securing an FT offer, I spent that summer doing lots of case prep and networking extensively in preparation for full-time consulting interviews. I reapplied, interviewed with many of the firms, and am now a consultant at a solid T2 strategy house.
Don't give up! Many people who fail to secure consulting internships during junior summer end up landing offers for full time (much less competitive due to the firms having way more slots). You can do it too!
