European Target / Semi-Target Review – Chances for IB / Top Finance?

Post:

Hi everyone,
I’d appreciate some honest feedback on my profile and outlook for high-finance roles (IB / AM / consulting) coming from Europe.

Education / Applications

  • Tilburg University – BSc Economics (accepted)
  • Maastricht University – Economics & Business Economics (decision pending)
  • University of St. Gallen (HSG) – BBA, admission test scheduled (Feb 2026)
  • University of Amsterdam – Economics & Business Economics, admission test (March 2026)
  • Erasmus RSM – rejected
  • EBS Universität – Bachelor in Business Studies (accepted)

Planned applications:

  • University of Mannheim (BSc Economics / Business Economics)
  • Copenhagen Business School (IBA / Economics)

Academic Profile

  • German Abitur: 2.5 overall
    • Math: 11 points
    • Social Studies: 10 points
  • Strong interest in economics, capital markets & political economy

Experience & Extracurriculars

  • Internship at a superior state authority (economic / policy focus)
  • Ongoing political & economic engagement (debating, youth organizations)
  • School math & debating competitions
  • 3 years work experience as a waiter (started at 15, high workload environment)
  • 2 finance-related certificates (fundamentals / quantitative focus)

Goal
Long term, my goal is to leverage a strong economics and finance foundation first (IB/PE/VC) into senior leadership roles (C-level / board positions) at large corporates or financial institutions, not just front-office finance roles. potentially followed by a top Master’s (HSG / LSE / Oxbridge / Bocconi / target US).

Question
Given my profile and realistic outcomes,

  1. Which of these universities would give me the best optionality for finance?
  2. Are there schools I should still consider at this stage?
  3. What would you focus on strengthening first if you were in my position?

Appreciate any honest input – especially from people familiar with the European pipeline.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of your situation and advice for your goals:

University Choices and Targeting Finance Roles:

  1. University of St. Gallen (HSG):

    • Strengths: HSG is a top-tier European school for finance, with strong placement in IB, PE, and consulting, especially in Switzerland and Germany. Its reputation and alumni network are highly regarded across Europe.
    • Recommendation: Prioritize excelling in the admission test. If admitted, HSG should be your top choice for optionality in finance roles.
  2. University of Amsterdam (UvA):

    • Strengths: UvA's MSc Quantitative Finance is well-regarded, but for undergraduate studies, its reputation is more regional. Placement into top finance roles may require additional effort and networking.
    • Recommendation: Consider it a backup if HSG doesn’t work out.
  3. Tilburg University:

    • Strengths: Tilburg has a solid reputation in economics but is not a traditional target for high-finance roles. Placement into IB or PE would likely require a strong master’s degree afterward.
    • Recommendation: A decent option but not ideal for your goals.
  4. Maastricht University:

    • Strengths: Similar to Tilburg, Maastricht is respected academically but not a target for top finance roles. Its alumni network in high finance is limited.
    • Recommendation: Consider it a backup.
  5. EBS Universität:

    • Strengths: EBS is a semi-target in Germany, with decent placement in IB and consulting within the DACH region. However, its international reputation is weaker compared to HSG or Bocconi.
    • Recommendation: A reasonable choice if you plan to stay in Germany or pursue a master’s at a top-tier school later.
  6. Planned Applications:

    • University of Mannheim: Strong in economics and business, with good placement in Germany. It’s a semi-target for finance roles in the DACH region.
    • Copenhagen Business School (CBS): CBS has a solid reputation in Northern Europe, with good placement in consulting and finance. It’s a semi-target for IB in Europe.

Additional Schools to Consider:

  • Bocconi University: Bocconi’s MSc Finance is a top-tier program for IB and PE in Europe. If you’re open to studying in Italy, it’s worth considering for your master’s.
  • London School of Economics (LSE): LSE is a top target for finance roles in London and globally. While it’s more relevant for master’s programs, keep it in mind for the future.
  • Warwick Business School: Warwick is a strong semi-target in the UK, with good placement in London.

Strengthening Your Profile:

  1. Academic Performance:

    • Your Abitur score (2.5) is on the lower side for top schools. Focus on excelling in your undergraduate studies to compensate and aim for a high GPA.
  2. Networking:

    • Start building connections early through LinkedIn, alumni networks, and finance-related events. Networking is crucial for breaking into IB and PE.
  3. Internships:

    • Secure finance-related internships as soon as possible. Even small boutique firms or local banks can provide valuable experience and help you build your resume.
  4. Technical Skills:

    • Continue building your quantitative and technical skills. Consider additional certifications (e.g., CFA Level 1, financial modeling courses) to strengthen your finance foundation.
  5. Extracurriculars:

    • Leverage your debating and youth organization experience to demonstrate leadership and communication skills. Consider joining finance societies or investment clubs at university.

Final Thoughts:

  • Best Options: HSG should be your top priority, followed by Mannheim and CBS. EBS is a good backup if you plan to stay in Germany.
  • Focus Areas: Prioritize academic excellence, internships, and networking. These will be key to breaking into high finance roles and positioning yourself for a top master’s program later.

Good luck with your journey into finance!

Why HSG followed by mannheim and CBS?
Isn't Tilburg Bsc or UvA Bsc better for high Finance - I mean rankings are better than EBS - especially international.
Is a the Bachelor program in Economics a good foundation for a C-LVL Position in a big company, or should i do International Business Administration. Personally i like both but economics is more quant like and i would prefer to break into investement banking or private equity for a good work experience. I feel economics is more recognized and more quant like IBA

For DACH Maastrich and HSG are the best.
Mannheim is also amazing but you have no shot with your grades.
Your Abitur is not great so try to get into HSG.
