Help for my Master's Degree Choice (HSG, ESCP, Frankfurt, USI)
Hi guys,
You'll need to help me choose which master's program to start studying for in September 2023.
I'd want to share my profile with you first.
Italian student, age 22, majoring in July 2023, from an Italian (semi) target school. A 3.7/4 GPA, participation in one student society, and a six-month internship at a asset management firm in Milan. Low GMAT, hence I am unable to apply to schools like LSE, LBS, MiF St. Gallen, etc.
In the future, I'd like to break into the investment banking industry, primarily in the leveraged finance area. Naturally, London would be my top pick, but I also enjoy Switzerland and Germany. However, I haven’t spoken German since middle school. (probably A1).
I received the following letters of admissions:
1) USI Lugano, MiF
2) St Gallen, Master in accounting and corporate finance (MACFin)
3) ESCP, MiM
4) Frankfurt School of finance and management, MiF
I've a couple of questions I would like someone answer:
1) Should I consider working for a year to gain more experience, possibly in the IB industry? (Remember that it can be challenging for someone who has recently completed their undergraduate studies to find an internship in IB in Italy. Although not impossible, it is rather challenging because all of the major companies tend to favor masters grads)
2) Which of the following programs, MACFin at HSG, MIF at Frankfurt, and MiM at ESCP, would you regard to be better compared? Do you believe that the DACH Area's bran reputation, St. Gallen, is more important than the MiF and MiM program, which I find to be the most appealing? Although the MACFin program shares several electives with MiF, it is tied to a field that probably doesn't typically lead to an IB position (but it is still a good curriculum).
3) Do you believe that St. Gallen has a higher brand reputation than the other two institutions in the DACH Region, even though their MACFin program is not their top-notch program?
4) Do you believe that German proficiency is currently a requirement in Frankfurt and Zurich for an IB position?
5) What do you think about USI?
Honestly would apply to tier 2 UK schools like UCL or Imperial. It isn't that hard to enter those schools and have the London brand which will help you greatly.
I can't compete with tier-1 universities in the UK if I attend a tier-2 institution, as the former dominate the London IB industry.
Furthermore, the one-year master's degree does not provide me the opportunity to gain further work experience (such as another six-month internship during my studies).
Last but not least, attending a UK university will require me to remain there when I graduate. Although this is great, it will prevent me from pursuing a career in the industry in either Germany or Switzerland.
Ok so if you want to stay in Switzerland or Germany then aim for HSG as top 1 choice. Then I would pick FSFM. Study in universities from there if you want to stay there.
let me guess, the ug is catollica? just go to escp like half of bocconi, you will have a good network and not deal with language barrier
Disagree especially if you are talking about Switzerland or Germany. HSG the way to go :)
