Joining political party society at university. Bad idea?

Basically I've been interested in politics for a long time and would like to join and get a society position on the society of a political party at my university as I'm interested in the industry and want to build my network.

Just curious as to whether listing this position on my CV is a bad idea? For example "President of X society" is good for my CV but I have a bad feeling if whichever recruiter reads my CV has opposing political views they will just throw my CV in the bin.

Has anyone else done this and was it an advantage or disadvantage? Any other opinions on this?

That's what I thought. But a senior society position of a political society seems kinda prestigious at least in the UK. A lot of our senior politicans were president of their university political society. I also see it on some people's linkedin which was why I was curious.

My comment was from a US perspective.  I do not know how it would be viewed in the UK.

Not really. Most well educated professionals in the big city are liberal. If it’s the Democratic club go for it , if it’s the Republican club avoid at all costs.

Agree with everyone else here, do it if interested but keep it off the resume. The upside is very limited. get leadership positions in non-partisan clubs

As a non-burger and family member of several card-carrying Social-Democratic Party members, I think I can elaborate:

If conservative or liberal (what burgers call libertarian), great, you're good to go.

Green, maybe. Our Greens are mainstream now, but I for one wouldn't want a mueslifucker in my office.

Social-Democrats, hard pass. Lefties, obviously as well.

And as always, don't talk politics in the office.

...and the Truth shall set you free
