Msc in Ivey

Hey guys, first time posting here, just wondering if anyone has heard about this program?

http://www.ivey.uwo.ca/msc/

Its a MsC in management offered by Ivey.

I am slightly interested in pursuing grad school at the moment, but my gpa isn't superb (low 3.0) my friend who is in this program said its easy to get into, and Ivey is a pretty good household name for people in finance in Canada.

Currently I am working as a research monkey for a medium sized investment fund (for about 4 months now) in toronto but more school couldn't hurt.

I skimmed the website and it seems a little sketchy, but it is Ivey, which is a pretty decent name to have on your resume. So has anyone heard anything about this program?

thanks for any replies

Don Corleonemba, ivey yes. msc, ivey no

Ivey = HBS of Canada. Queens, rotman, york dont even come close in terms of prestige and alumni network.

TD, CIBC, RBC, Scotia, Genuity, BMO are full of Ivey grads.

so the MSC ivey isnt worth it even if it has the Ivey name?

I'm looking to have a crack at the entry level finance positions in Canada (preferrably geared towards an Investment Mgmt career track).

I had a look at the MSc Curriculum and it seems to have no modules on Finance, Accounting, Marketing, etc, what you expect on a standard business programme. It seems to be more of just International Business/Management (stuff like Cross cultural Management).

I'm not really looking for a well rounded curriculum as such (I treat this as more of an entry barrier). I'll probably have all 3 levels of the CFA cleared by the time I join Ivey's next MSc cohort (if I do, that is), but my concern was whether the curriculum would be an issue with recruiters. Ivey HBA seems to be the best business UG in Canada, and my question is whether I'd be considered an equally deserving candidate for the finance positions which HBAs usually get recruited to.

I'm banking on 1) The Brand 2) The Alumni Network 3) On Campus Recruiting opportunities.

What do you think? Is my skepticism about the curriculum warranted, or should I expect the Ivey network, brand & OCR to render it trivial?

Haven't even heard of Ivey's MSc program until recently. No, even with the 'Ivey' name, it doesn't translate to the same level of prestige and OCR opportunities. In terms of the alumni network, Ivey MSc grads would have access to it, but I'm not sure if HBAs and MBAs from Ivey would be as receptive to those coming out of the MSc program. I'd imagine their desire to help them or give them a shot would be more based on the person's prior experience/resume, and not just because they came from the same school.

In terms of "prestige", as measured by breadth of recruiters and top positions available to you, it goes: Ivey HBA >>> Ivey MBA (wherein Ivey MBAs don't get as many US banks or PE firms looking at them...)

I'd imagine MSc brings in a lot less than Ivey's MBA

I have a fairly impressive profile (by Indian Standards)

My background - Masters In Econ & Bachelors in electrical engineering from India's best Pvt Science & Tech University - at par with IITs. Followed it up with an academic finance research internship (in canada itself) buyside ops (BB BO) internship, and another internship with India's best Economic Think Tank. Might do another one with the central bank too. Expecting to work with an Internet Startup doing Equity Research of the Crowdsourced type - a challenge to sell side ER. The recruiting here is very very different. FO Analyst jobs usually go to MBAs because the MBAs don't have work experience. I hope you get the picture. For Finance jobs, there's NO WAY you can break in without the MBA, plus the market is very small. So the Target Schools are only the top 3 Indian Institutes of Management. My expected GMAT is 750+, GPA would be somewhere around 3.6. (we have it on a 10 scale, World Education Society converts mine to around 3.6)

Also, i'd probably have passed all the levels of CFA & CAIA. The only way I'm attending this program is if I'm offered a decent scholarship + the CEMS option, because I think of this as a way to experience 3 different cultures & schools.

What's your take on that? I'm looking to breakout of India where the job market is not only very small, but very biased towards MBAs (which I'm in no hurry to get). If needed I will head to the US and get an M7 MBA. But the kind of jobs which make for good experience on MBA apps available to me now are 0. So I was hoping Ivey's MSc would get me a foot in the door somewhere in Asset Management.

Should I hope that HBA/MBA alums would view my resume favourably on the basis of my CFA/CAIA/Internship value? Because if I'm asked to pay that kind of money... I doubt I'd enroll!

Listen - you seem to really reject others' views on the MSc program, despite what I said, and also despite what Valk said in another thread/post who answered your question in detail. The Ivey MSc program is very new and doesn't have any recognition from either the HBA or MBA program. People from Ivey don't just look for someone with 'Ivey' somewhere in their resume - they understand what the curriculum is like and they understand the type and quality of students coming from those programs.

Now, as you pointed out, the quality of one's resume is also important. And you'll find that there are non-targets with strong resumes that can get exposure. But you're also asking if MSc would result in the same respect and OCR opportunities. And my answer is, it most likely does not.

You're better off trying for a good MBA program.

I'm not rejecting those views. I'm actually partially agreeing with those and merely exploring the possibility of cracking a decent job with the MSc considering a strong resume/profile.

Anyhow, thanks for the insight and your time.
