My GMAT quant is terrible. Just took the test yesterday and got a 640 (38Q/ 39V). This was much lower than expected, my last 2 practice tests where 700 (43/43) and 710 (I forget the splits). Point is, I'm 90 percentile on reading and bouncing between 41 (actual GMAT) and 70 percentile on math. I've been out of school for about a year with no luck on the job front, my intentions were to take the GMAT and apply to the following programs: UNC (Macc), Uillinois (Macc), SMU (was supposed to be safety MSF), UT (MSF), and Villanova (MSF). MAcc programs seem to have higher percentage of job placements and I'd celebrate a big 4 or corporate accounting job at this point. given my lack of work experience (0) and my GPA (2.98) I figured a 700 plus would be necessary to get into UT/Villanova. I know my GMAT is at or above avg at UNC, Illinois, SMU, and Villanova but how bad is my quant going to hurt my application? I want to retake the test in January but I'd like to at least have a few apps done before February 1. I know UT is going to have to wait but do I have more than a 50/50 shot at the other programs mentioned? Should I consider Duke MMS?
Last bit of info: non target finance/Econ dble major, black male.

Just retake GMAT. Quant is important, and get at least Q46 is doable.
You'd get into UIUC with those stats. Competitive at Nova assuming you're a domestic student with some work experience. Probably a decent shot at SMU.
IMO, relax, take the test again and apply. You're not in that bad of shape.

Average GMAT is misleading. If you are a domestic student you can get into most programs with a much lower score. Chinese students push the average up but hurt placements.
Trust me. I see a TON of applicants every year and who gets in where. 3.0 and a 640 will get you in a lot of places.
On a side note, this fetish for a 700+ GMAT is entirely a T10 MBA creation. It doesn't predict success in or out of school and you only need a score that high because of the competition at these MBA programs. MSFs do not have a ranking nor are they as competitive as the top MBA programs so you don't need a ridiculous high score St many of them.
How do programs calculate the GPA for admission? I know some programs look at the last 60 hours, but I went to three schools, had an awful first year (missed exams to take my mom to chemotherapy appointments) but after that I did well.
