New Laptop for Modelling Practice and MBA
Will be starting this fall at an MBA program so looking to get a new laptop to replace my 2018 MBP. Planning on getting windows since Excel works better on that OS.
Looking at Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 with the Snapdragon X Elite or a Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 13 with Intel Ultra 7 Lunar Lake.
Somewhat leaning towards the Surface due to slightly better screen and battery life, as well as being slightly cheaper if I buy used or refurbished.
Any thoughts on limitations of the snapdragon chip? I know there are no issues with Excel but curious if I'll run into any trouble with other software like Bloomberg Terminal etc.
If anyone has a Gen 13 X1 Carbon, do you have any issues with loud fan noise or battery life?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights for your laptop decision:
Lenovo ThinkPad Series: Lenovo ThinkPads, particularly the X1 Carbon series, are highly recommended for finance professionals. They are praised for their excellent keyboards, robust build quality, and reliable performance. A user mentioned running multiple tabs, Excel, and PowerPoint simultaneously without any speed issues. However, you should verify specific concerns like fan noise and battery life for the Gen 13 model.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 with Snapdragon X Elite: While the Surface Laptop is known for its sleek design, great screen, and battery life, the Snapdragon chip might pose compatibility issues with certain software. Although Excel runs fine, you should confirm whether Bloomberg Terminal and other finance-related software are fully supported on ARM-based processors.
General Recommendations:
If you're leaning towards the Surface Laptop, double-check software compatibility for your specific needs. For the X1 Carbon, consider user reviews on fan noise and battery life to ensure it meets your expectations.

Excel runs pretty smooth on my ipad, in particular you can get a physical keyboard if that’s your style.
I personally like the touch screen keyboard, I’ve mastered the vlookup 2-finger blast combo.
Furthermore I crank out excel models on the morning bog - really gives me the edge over the other analysts in my class.
