NYU Econ (CAS) Vs. Cornell Econ (CAS)

Hi, I think the title really says it all. I love both places, but I want to know which one will give me better job prospects in the long run.

Also, any input on both schools would be nice. For example, how difficult is it to get a 3.5+ at either NYU or Cornell doing econ, how difficult is it to get connections, etc. Thank you.

Lastly, I anticipate that people will tell me to internally transfer to NYU's or Cornell's business school, but I know the odds of that are slim, so I am not really banking on that. I will try, though.

Cornell and it’s not a close call. What is up with this year’s crowd? Is there a reason the hs class of ‘20 are all hesitant to go with Cornell? It’s an Ivy League school. Its ranking on US News sucks this year, but Forbes and WSJ have it at 11 and 9. No offense to those at NYU, UVA, mich, etc., but they’re just not peer schools at all.

Don’t take Cornell over HYPSM obviously, but don’t go to schools out of the top 15 over Cornell unless they are giving you a fat financial aid package.

From all your recent comments on Cornell v X-school threads, I'm like 99% sure you're someone who went there and is trying to defend his school. Nothing wrong with this but instead of always saying Cornell > all because Cornell is an Ivy (and the lowest at that), showing some degree of objectivity is what ultimately helps OP.

OP, Cornell CAS is a bit better than NYU CAS, but it's not like a Harvard vs Tulane kind of difference. Ultimately, pick whichever school you feel like will set you up for success, irrespective of rankings (especially if it's Forbes).

You can be 100% sure, I’m not hiding that I went there. I can also confirm that I did post on a couple of these threads because I have a lot of free time these days. Obviously not all of the comments in all the threads are me.

That being said, come on. I’m not going to say “go to Cornell” in a Harvard/Wharton vs Cornell thread. If I did, please feel free to call me retarded. I genuinely think these people would be doing themselves a huge disservice by not going with Cornell in these specific scenarios. Go on LinkedIn and you can check the schools. The Cornell network on Wall Street is a lot bigger than people give it credit for.

Okay thanks. I personally always leaned towards Cornell, but I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something about NYU that made it stand out. Just tryna make sure that I pick the right school.

There is so much competition at Cornell, if you aren't at Dyson you really aren't doing too hot right off the bat. Major doesn't matter at UVA anymore because of accelerated recruiting and Umich Ross kids are top of the line and place amazingly. They're definitely peer schools and a non-Dyson kid at Cornell is pretty fucked considering the amount of students that are recruiting at the same time.

I didn't apply to Mcintire/Ross, so I mean we can compare them, but that doesn't really change the fact that I didn't get into Mcintire/Ross. I will try my best to unfuck myself from this situation though.

Throw some more MS please. Mcintire/Ross place a lot better than a non Dyson kid. That's a fact, you can check linkedin, and keep defending your school. Econ students are seen as 2nd class citizens and have had at least 2 people I know in Ithaca who go to school there confirm.

I didn't throw MS, I didn't even see this until now (some of us are actually working people). If you checked LinkedIn and somehow came to the conclusion that McIntire and Ross have better placement than non-Dyson Cornell, I don't know what to say. They're good schools, I would never say that they're not. They just aren't better than Cornell in terms of placement or prestige.

We can walk through this together if you'd like. Go on LinkedIn on your computer and type in Evercore. Click on the People tab, then select Greater New York Area. Cornell's right there on top. Now click on that. I see Econ, Econ/Bio, Math, Hotel, Econ. Now let's do the same for Lazard. You'll notice that Cornell is near the top again and UVA/UMich aren't even on the first list of schools. Now for majors, I see Chemical Engineering, Econ, Hotel, Information Science, and Econ. Do this for literally any bank. I just used the first two EBs that came to mind. UVA and UMich don't come close to sending the same number of people to top banks and PE firms (I also checked Blackstone and KKR).

This isn't directly relevant to the thread, so I won't be posting again, but anyone looking at this at a future time should know that Cornell (Dyson or not) does in fact place better than both UVA and UMich. Dyson has fewer than 200 students per grade, they're not the reason Cornell is a powerhouse. If you can go to a top 15 school, go. But there are very few schools outside of the top 15 that place better than Cornell (Dyson or not).

OP, I wouldn't be so quick to listen to people claim the pedigree of an Ivy League beats X-school (Non-Ivy). If you choose NYU, the opportunities you'll have to network and conduct off-cycle internships will be unmatched. You are minutes away from BBs and not to mention the alumni network from NYU is massive on the street. With that being said, I don't think you get the same experience as going to Cornell if that makes sense. One school is directly located in the middle of one of the largest cities in the world and the other is quite the opposite. To be frank, I don't know which one I would choose. BUT, I think you have to go with your gut because both schools will set you up well for IB recruiting. Where do you see yourself for the next 4 years?

Thanks. I think I will go to Cornell. I appears as if the environment will be better for me. I really just wanted to make sure that I wasn't making an obviously stupid mistake by going to Cornell instead of NYU.
