Post-MBA Asset Management Probabilities

Incoming MBA '25 candidate.

I know AM IM is a tough one to crack (especially Fidelity, Wellington, T. Rowe Price, etc) but rate my chances of pursuing this career path through MBA recruiting. I'm going to a T15 school and have around a couple of years of WE actively managing a seven-figure trading portfolio with PnL ownership + idea generation / investment writing. It was a great experience, and formed a pretty sound investment philosophy, and while profitable, active trading is not a route I'm keen on taking. I enjoy the research aspect of it so my first choice is to recruit to AM and have SS ER as backup (I know, also tough to break into). I'm taking CFA L1 in late August to improve my chances, but wanted to see what the WSO community says.

TIA

I appreciate people wanting to jump into the conversation, but please keep it to anecdotal / personal experiences. Not really interested in anything from wso / reddit being echoed.

I’m in the exact same boat. T-20 school graduating in 2025. 5 years of finance experience but in WM. Last two years were overseeing discretionary models for a ~$1b WM team. I have the CFP certification (not relevant for equity research roles) and am taking CFA L1 in august.

It seems the comp isn’t quite as good in SS ER, but the recruiting process is at least a bit more defined? Would definitely be nice to have a “playbook” going into recruiting vs grinding via personal network/job sites etc
