SMITH School of Business (University of Maryland) IB prospects
I'm a sophomore at the Smith School of Business.
I realize my school isn't a target, but there seems to be huge variation among non-targets. They can be as good as NYU, or as low as community college (no disrespect to community college; I was there for a year).
As a Smith student, what can I do to increase my chances? I've found the following:

Anybody know any IB firms that recruit at Smith or that have taken Smith students in the past? I know there are a few alumni at each bulge bracket, so breaking in is certainly possible, but are there any firms that may actually try to recruit Smith students?

Your best bet is to actually ask the people who go to IBD at UMD as they have experienced the process and will have a much more valid opinion than anyone else.
UMD Alum here currently working in Top BB (GS/MS/JPM) S&T.
I think fellow programs are a great way to boost your resume, especially Wall Street Fellows for networking. Lemma Senbet is the best program all because you are managing a >$1mm equity portfolio, but usually you can only do it your senior year (still an advantage for AM/HF recruiting). If you manage to do it your junior year, that could certainly be advantageous for IB. Emerging CFOs and other finance fellowships are less good.
As for recruiting, I'd say that Stifil and BAML are the most prominent for IB. However, we do have a number of graduates each year go to other IB programs. I'd reach out to them on LinkedIn for more advice by using the search feature.
Join SFG (Smith Finance Group) your freshman year and try to get an internship at a local boutique during the semester and/or summers. There’s a few that UMD students who make it into IB intern at frequently — England & Company, Greenberg Advisors, Shot Tower Capital, etc.
