Transfer to Baruch from Community College for Economics

Hey everyone,

I’m currently at a community college and looking to transfer to Baruch to pursue Economics/Finance. My long-term goal is to break into asset management as an analyst and progress to a portfolio manager or go into wealth management, and I see Baruch as a strong step given its proximity to NYC, alumni network, and opportunities for internships.

I’d appreciate any insights from people who’ve made a similar move. Specifically:
• How competitive is the transfer process?
• What GPA should I target to have a strong shot?
• How does transferring in affect access to clubs, internships, and networking opportunities compared to students who started at Baruch as freshmen?
• Any tips for making the most out of Baruch if I get in?

For context, I have around a 3.5 GPA right now at community college and I’m pretty involved in extracurriculars, including leadership roles. I’m hoping that background will help me stand out in the transfer process, but I’m not sure how much weight Baruch places on GPA versus extracurricular involvement.

Would love to hear how other transfers balanced GPA, internships, and clubs once they got to Baruch. Any advice on which areas of study I should prioritize first would be really helpful and thank you guys in advance❤️

Transferring to Baruch from a community college can be a strategic move, especially if you're aiming for a career in asset management or wealth management. Here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Competitiveness of the Transfer Process

  • Baruch is known for being transfer-friendly, particularly for students from community colleges. While it may not be as competitive as transferring to schools like NYU or Columbia, you should still aim to present a strong application to stand out.

2. Target GPA

  • To maximize your chances, aim for a GPA of 3.5 or higher. While Baruch is more accessible than some other NYC schools, a strong GPA will not only help with admissions but also position you well for internships and networking opportunities once you're there.

3. Access to Clubs, Internships, and Networking

  • Transferring in may present some initial challenges compared to students who started as freshmen, particularly in terms of familiarity with the campus and existing networks. However:
    • Baruch's proximity to NYC and its strong alumni network provide ample opportunities for internships and networking.
    • Many clubs and organizations at Baruch are open to all students, including transfers. Make it a priority to join finance-related clubs and attend networking events as soon as possible.
    • Leverage Baruch's Career Center and mentorship programs to connect with alumni in asset management and wealth management.

4. Tips for Making the Most Out of Baruch

  • Network Aggressively: Start building relationships with professors, alumni, and peers immediately. Attend every networking event and career fair you can.
  • Join Relevant Clubs: Look for finance and investment-related clubs, such as the Investment Management Group or the Finance and Economics Society.
  • Secure Internships Early: Use Baruch's location in NYC to your advantage by applying for internships during the school year. Many firms in NYC are open to part-time interns.
  • Utilize the Alumni Network: Baruch has a strong alumni presence in NYC finance. Reach out to alumni on LinkedIn or through Baruch's alumni network for informational interviews and mentorship.
  • Maintain a High GPA: A strong academic record will help you stand out in competitive internship and job applications.

Baruch's affordability, location, and resources make it a solid choice for someone with your career goals. With the right strategy, you can leverage your time there to break into asset management or wealth management. Good luck!

I’ve thought about all of them, Baruch seems as the most ideal choice as I’ll have to commute

huh? dude go to NYU Columbia if you can

Baruch is fine and good enough. Join a club on campus, Investment Management Group (if you are interested in more traditional finance roles) or 50five capital (mostly for S&T). The school itself won’t get you a job, but being in the city it is easy to network.

The classes and coursework is fairly light, which means you also have time to get some other internships while you’re there. If you qualify for SEO or some other diversity programs, do all that you can.

Feel free to pm if you have any questions.

Appreciate the insight man. I’ve been looking into the Wall Street Club as well, do you think it’s worth joining along with the Investment Management Group? I’ll PM you to connect and ask a few more questions, thank you!
