UvA vs EUR econometrics master
I recently graduated from Erasmus University Rotterdam with a Bachelor's degree in Econometrics, achieving a 7.7 GPA. I am now considering my next academic step, with the goal of pursuing a career in investment banking.
I currently face three main options for my Master’s studies:
- MSc Financial Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam (UvA)
- MSc Quantitative Finance at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR)
- MSc Financial Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR)
While I have already been accepted into UvA’s Financial Econometrics programme, I also have the option to proceed with either of the EUR Master’s programmes. However, I hesitate to spend another year in Rotterdam, especially since I am not a native or proficient Dutch speaker. A potential gap year is on my mind, as it could allow me to change geography and possibly position myself closer to my long term goal which is living and working in London.

I am currently weighing which option will best align with my ambitions in investment banking, while also considering the lifestyle and location factors that are important to me.
A 7.7 in econometrics at Erasmus aim for a master at LSE :)
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of your options and considerations:
1. MSc Financial Econometrics at UvA (University of Amsterdam)
2. MSc Quantitative Finance at EUR
3. MSc Financial Economics at EUR
4. Gap Year
Recommendation:
If your ultimate goal is to work in London, taking a gap year to apply to top UK programs (e.g., LSE MSc Finance, Imperial MSc Finance, or Oxford MSc Financial Economics) could be the most strategic move. These programs have direct pipelines to London IB roles and offer unparalleled networking opportunities.
However, if you prefer to start your Master’s immediately, the MSc Quantitative Finance at EUR would likely provide the strongest alignment with IB ambitions due to its specialized focus and EUR’s reputation. The MSc Financial Econometrics at UvA is a close second, especially if you value a change in location and a strong quantitative foundation.
