Vanderbilt MSF - In Hindsight
So without getting too specific, I graduated from the Vandy MSF a few years back - came from a non target and was switching from a technical (science/STEM) major to finance/consulting, and landed a top shop out of the program.
For those of you looking to break in without going to a school with connections, it's an absolute cheat code. Most/all of my friends got MM banking at a minimum and a couple of years out have placed to PE/transitioned to corporate in T1 cities or the south. It was like the full college experience again condensed in to 1 year. Also you're in class with a bunch of people just like you gunning for top banking/consulting offers which is unique.
I think some of the senior faculty/staff has transitioned/left the program and the hiring market has been tighter recently, but when I went it was amazing. Recruit for the first 1-3 months, land an offer, and then party in Nashville for a year. I made some of my closest friends during that year, and we got in to more trouble than you'd believe (in a good way). Also you get people dual tracking with their JDs and you take classes with MBAs which is interesting. I will say my class and the years before me personality/sharpness wise seemed to be stronger than the current classes, not sure if I'm just biased, though.
Why do you think the earlier cohorts were stronger? From what I heard the last 2 year recruiting cycle has been brutal for Vandy MSF grads
It's partially the market and partially the admissions process. The staff changed and the new folks are just not as good as the old ones at scouting talent in my opinion, the classes feel meaningfully less sharp just having networked with them. The program is prob still great though if you know what you're doing
What are your thoughts on someone coming from Canada, meaning there’s an element of visa issues concerning being an international? I have the TN visa which makes it a bit easier but did you find your international classmates did well in recruiting? Have some LMM IB internship experience and considering the move as a Canadian from a similar background (non finance but STEM)
It was candidly harder for intl students to first be accepted and then land a job due to this layer. I saw quite a few people manage to do it successfully however
Hi, thank you for this post! I’m in the same place you were—STEM ug from an unknown school, but finance internships & LoRs. Do you know the acceptance rate of the program & do you have any advice for a strong app? What did you excel at to land a top job from a less traditional background?
Do you keep up closely with newer classes? I’ve heard MSF outcomes are dropping across the board, which is worrisome. Do you encounter many Vandy alum (whether UG or grad school) at work?
When does recruiting start at the masters level? If I’m applying right out of undergrad.
Do I recruit once the program starts or should I already have received an intern offer prior since it’s a 1 year program.
Thanks
not op but while you do not necessarily need something lined up (majority would not), you'd be wise to be putting in applications as soon as you see them, and then once you get on campus be able to utilize the on-campus recruiting they have there as well.
Hey man
Saw your post about Vanderbilt MSF and wanted to get your honest thoughts on my chances.
Quick background:
• Senior at non target in a business school in boston
• Finance major, double concentration in Corporate Finance & Investments
• GPA: 3.3
• IB internship (not NYC)
• Have a PWM offer at a BB for Summer 2026, but I want to go into IB instead
Main questions:
1. Based on how what you know, do I realistically have a shot at Vandy MSF with this profile?
2. What can I do from now until apps to actually stand out and make myself competitive?
Appreciate any straight advice
Hey! So I have an interview lined up this week with admission.
Stats:
3.96 Majoring in Quantitative Economics and Minoring in applied math at a non-target
Opted out of GRE
2 internships, one in wealth management and RBC Capital Markets and one in payroll compliance consulting at a b tier accounting firm
Founded a startup in my college town, not much traction yet and still in developmental process but we managed to bring the community and school together
I did research on the implication of AI in finance, specifically focusing on robo-advisors and how it is changing the landscape of wealth management
I was just wondering what tips you had for the interview and how to be successful. This is my dream program!!
How do you think it went, I also had my interview this past Friday
Honestly, I think it went really well! My interviewer was really receptive to my responses and I think I did a pretty good job responding adequately. How did it go for you?
Have you received admissions decision yet?
No not yet
Have you ?
No not yet. Hopefully next week.
Hi, commenting again as I interviewed for this program. Are you saying you and other MSF alumni network/help new MSF students? If so, that's really great.
How does recruiting work so that most everyone has a job in hand in the first semester?? How do you network so fast if your undergrad is no-name?
I also noticed that the locations in their career reports vary a lot year by year. Recently, most stay in Nashville, which is interesting as it's not rly a financial hub. Does everyone generally end up in their preferred city, and the variation is due to each cohort's preferences? Or does this mean placement is highly subject to external forces?
It's hard to find the non-banker alumni on LinkedIn - what are some titles/places the real estate folks start out at?
Thanks!!
