Warwick University (International Management) or Durham University (Economics)

I'm a prospective university student currently holding two offers one for International Management at WBS and one at Durham for Economics. I'm aiming at either a Strategy Consulting/Corporate Strategy job or a role in AM after university; given my aspirations which course do you think I should choose? Economics provides me with a more quantitative, analytical skill and I find the subject more interesting than Management in general whereas International Management will be somewhat easier to get a top grade in, more optional modules (allowing me to study the areas that I find most compelling). If it makes any difference Durham Econ grads seem to on average get better jobs but Warwick is considered a target for BBs (not so much consulting firms) so may be viewed as a marginally better university. Finally do you feel it would improve my chances if I were to do a year abroad at Wharton, Cornell, HEC or ESSEC as part of my year abroad?

Thanks for your time,

J

It depends on what you want culture-wise. Out of curiosity, what college is it at Durham?
Warwick writ large is nominally better, but economics at Durham is the superior course.

Thanks for responding, I chose St Cuthbert's Society (for the self catered accommodation). Do you feel that Economics is significantly superior? I'm leaning towards it but the year abroad is mighty tempting; do you think that the opportunity to study abroad at a top Business School (Wharton, HEC etc) makes any difference or will my employment prospects be better from Econ at Durham?

Slight bump; I guess what I'm trying to get at is that since the two universities are so close in reputation, will doing the Economics degree put me in a better position in future or is Warwick superior to the point that the International Management degree will put me in a better position? Thanks,

Thanks again, I too prefer the culture at Durham but it's going to be more expensive for me to live there, meaning I'll likely have to work more hours in a part time job than I would at Warwick which could impact my degree outcome. However, I don't want to shoot myself in the foot and if economics would stand me in far better stead I'd be prepared to ake the investment.

Both have very good reps and I know that Durham is targeted by some MBB consulting firms i.e Bain & Company. The economics course at Durham is highly rated. I think Durham would be a better choice, I have some friends who went to Durham who have FT offers from big names in AM and consulting. Not to discredit Warwick, it too has a very good rep and is targeted.

Many thanks for your reply, would you say that Durham or Warwick is more targeted? Have to decide tomorrow and it's proving to be quite tough!
