When I am applying to B-school a couple years down the road...

I am graduating from one of HYPMS this year with a > 3.9 GPA. I worked at a BB in IBD last summer and am going to work at MBB after graduation.

I am planning to work hard for the first couple years, find out what type of industry/job I would like to pursue in the long term, and go to b-school to build some network.

I don't really know much about how b-school admissions work - all I have heard is that working at MBB is seen favorably when applying to top b-schools. But my guess is that admissions to these top schools are still very competitive, and I am sure a ton of qualified candidates get turned by top b-schools.

I believe that there is no point in going to b-school if I can't get into top 3 (HBS, Stanford, Wharton are considered top 3?), so I really want to maximize my chance of getting accepted to one of these 3 schools. I was hoping someone could tell me more about what I could do in the couple years I spend at MBB to build up my credentials?

Thanks guys, and happy new year!

Do good work -- take on interesting projects. In your spare time, do some sort of community service event in a leadership role. Do things that make you an "interesting" person. Rigorously pursue a hobby that you're interested in. Blow the cover off the GMAT. Basically -- don't spend your off time watching T.V. and drinking. Live an active and involved life.

Listen to Comp Banker. Also, if I may add, start studying for the GMATs early. Then, be creative - I had a coworker who cold called foreign governments (real deal) got through to a minister of finance and worked with her for a year on the weekends on projects. She got in to Wharton.

What I'm trying to say is stand out. Your job is already enough to get you noticed, now your scores and ECs need to shine.

...don't slack of at work, you don't have it made just yet.
