2nd Round Energy Trading Interview
What should I expect and is there any way to get myself prepared before hand? It's for full time spot in BP's IST group. I have a non-traditional (engineering) degree so I figure I'll be at a slight disadvantage on the technical end on some things. Anything to help me get up to speed would be appreciated. Thanks.
(waits for monty09 to reply)
I'm guessing you did well on the technical aspect of the first round interview. Shouldn't expect you to know too much. Know markets and have some trade ideas, mental math, prob, and be able to express your views on nat gas/power in an articulate way.
Use the search function. I've addressed your question many times and Revolution's response really isn't that accurate.
I read your responses in this thread: //www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/bp-ist-program prior to posting this thread. I was more interested in the differences I can expect between the on-campus interview to the "super day" process. Thanks for the help though, looks like I'll be reading over an energy trading book I found until the interview(s).
The super day process really isn't much different than the on-campus, except I would say it is more getting a feel for how you will fit in with the culture and the groups. As you probably noticed from the on-campus interview, the interviews really aren't your typical trading interviews with probability questions, crazy mental math, and high-pressure, etc. Also, they design the interviews so you don't need any prior market knowledge. So trade ideas and market views really aren't necessary. Moreso looking for how your brain sorts through various situations and deals with supply, demand, arbitrage concepts at a very basic level + behaviorals.
Also, if energy trading is your thing, I highly recommend reading Oil 101. Especially if you end up scoring the IST gig, a very concrete understanding of Oil 101 will blow everyone away since a lot of your time there will be spent learning the terminology, drilling processes, refining processes, pipeline transportation, types of oil, etc.
I worked as a process engineer in a refinery the past summer and shadowed the economics and planning group there which is how I got interested in physical trading and etc. I also have a pretty decent understanding of upstream processes (drilling, reservoir, etc) so hopefully that will come in handy. I would be much more comfortable in a technical petroleum or process engineering interview than trading but I'm much more interested in the trading end, especially in energy. Thanks for the help, hopefully it goes well because I really want this job.
HELP: S&T interview next week (energy trading desk) (Originally Posted: 10/11/2008)
Have an interview scheduled for next week for energy trading. I understand the basics of forwards/futures/hedging risk but my foundation is stronger in equity derivatives and fixed income. So I don't know what to expect. What are some good resources where I can get up to date with the market in a fairly quick amount of time. I understand energy is much more difficult to master but I don't want to walk into the interview with a deer in the headlights.
Background: UCLA Undergrad applying for a full-time offer which includes a 7 week training program. Position includes energy markets as well as agriculture trading.
First S&T interview, interned in risk management the summer before.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
PM'ed you.
Could you please PM me as well? I have similar interviews coming up.
Thanks!

Hello everyone,
I have a second phone interview and a on-site interview for a real-time power trading position. This is a entry-level position with about a year or less of experience required.
I was wondering if any of you guys can give any insight on what questions to expect, what they will be looking for in a candidate, etc. I imagine it will be mostly behavioral questions, since I do not have much experience in energy trading. I just finished an internship at a energy trading prop shop.
what kind of firm is it?
they have a unique business model. they're not a bank/hf/utility. they just called themselves an energy management company.
Where did you do your energy internship?
at a energy trading prop shop
