Front Office Trade Analytics Role (Equity Derivatives Desks), worth a try?
Hi all,
I recently bumped into a Risk and Analytics role to support Equity Derivatives (Exotics/Structured products) trading desks at an tier-2 bank. The main responsibility is to collect data from multiple sources (trading desks/risk systems/quants), consolidate the data, and do ad-hoc analysis (intra-day risk analysis), and populate stats/reports to traders/senior managment.
This is a small team (only 2-3, supporting global trading desks US/UK), and the team does sit on the trading floor supporting multiple Equities trading desks. People I met along the way seems nice to work with (MS in Quant Finance, CS PhD, etc.). The MD (head of trading) seems a bit intimidating tho.
I have a quantitative background (BS Math + MFE) and work as a risk quant researcher at an exchange. I mainly work with listed Equity Index Derivatives these days.
Given the above info, could you please help on a few questions:
1. Is this role considered a FO role? What is the usual career path and exit ops? Is it possible to move into trading in a few years.
2. Is this role a good fit for me? This is not a desk quant role, and interviewers have strong backgrounds in CS. On the daily basis, they work with databases, Tableau, Python, etc.
3. Is this a job where I will learn a lot (aspects of trading specificlly)?
4. How's career outlook for Equity Exotics desk specificlly?
Thanks in advance.

In summary, this role appears to be a good fit for you, offering valuable learning opportunities and a potential pathway to trading roles in the future. The career outlook for Equity Exotics desks remains strong, especially for individuals with a robust quantitative background.

The title and responsibilities make me think it’s middle office but if it’s truly a risk role that would be FO. I would compare the compensation to sales or trading positions at that level, risk is typically pretty close to those for juniors
Very helpful! thanks for your time!
Definitely not a front-office role, given you are not directly generating revenue. Sounds more like MO imo.
