Internship: GS Markets vs. Google APMM
Have internship offers for both GS Global Market (S&T) & Google Associate Product Marketing Management (APMM).
For further context, I did the Global Markets internship last summer and liked certain aspects of it (pervasive markets knowledge, some technical financial knowledge, and securities analysis, compensation) and disliked many others (long hours, lack of substantial practical work, few areas to show creativity, menial and mundane work etc.).
Google APMM Pros would be: better work-life balance, more practical work, higher starting compensation first year-post grad (if I get a return and choose to go back), new tech experience. Cons: Virtual internship, lower intern pay, fear of getting pigeonholed into marketing.
Would love thoughts on this!
Google APMM
Why do a markets internship twice if you plan on doing management consulting full-time? It's not relevant and it gives you fewer experiences to talk about. Google APMM is more relevant to management consulting and gives you a better "story" when asked "Why management consulting?". Intern pay is irrelevant unless you're struggling for cash to the extent where the difference in pay actually matters.
Agree with poster above. You already have markets experience so getting a different experience will likely be a far better learning opportunity and more interesting/relevant to speak about during consulting interviews.
S&T will also give you very little experience that is related to your stated interests (impact investing, venture capital, law, social justice, tech entrepreneurship) whereas pmm is at least useful experience for both vc and tech entrepreneurship
A few questions:
If you don’t have to renege, I think both options are very good and I would take Google. For MBB, they love brand names so I’m very sure both options will get you interviews. But like others said, since you’ve done the internship APMM will be a nice experience. Furthermore, I think APMM may open doors to Google APM, which is a higher caliber program overall. And even if it doesn’t, APMM is very solid.
If you do have to renege, that changes the thinking a lot. I’ve made a similar decision so feel free to ask

Google because you can move to some solid Growth Equity/VC firms later in your career. A lot of people usually try to exit to tech later in their career, you’re cutting out the middle approach and starting at their exit opp.
I'm still in college so take this with a grain of salt. Why go through a finance career with long hours when you could go into a chill tech job that is arguably more interesting? Also, I've seen a few people transition from product marketing management to product management on linkedin, but I'm not sure how common that is.
