Advice needed for one of the most unluckiest guy on wso
I spent a lot of time reading abt articles on this website..as the name says it really is an oasis about knowledge related to finance...i know there are lots of people who've gotten great advice from the members of this site and directed their life towards the correct path..I'm confident somebody will help me as well!
here's my story:
I'm an engineer in cs and i"ll be graduating in 2 months from top 10 engg college in India..did'nt have a pleasant journey in the past 3 years..due to lack of money, and applying wrong advice from wrong people(which was my mistake)....i dont want to do that mistake ever again!(PAIN+REFLECTION=PROGRESS!)
i've spent lots of time in the past reading about julian robertson,Warren Buffett,Paul tudor jones(his doumentary was one of the best i"ve ever seen),ray dalio(his ideas in his book "principles of bridge water")..watching interviews(charlie rose),movies(WS,WS-2,boiler room, floored, billion dollar traders, inside job)...i came to conclusion that finance is the path that i'm interested & passionate about....
to be frank i've never traded before...out of passion, desire to learn about this i have spent day s downloading books related to finance(hf,pe,qhf,value-investing,vc etc..etc),video tutorials...i need advice on where to start
i got recruited to Soc Gen for their tech team...missed jp n GS due to lack of prep(those were tech job as well)....(u can call me a whiner)
my question is:
what should I do to get into high finance" - Investment Banking, Private Equity, Hedge Funds and related areas like Venture Capital, corporate finance, et al.
what shud i study in next couple of years...MSF,MBA,CFA or any other degree??in which college??
learning quantitative subject like probability, stochastics, calculus, computer programming language is not a problem.
as GG says in WS;"Give me guys that are
poor, smart, and hungry, and no feelings. You lose a few,
but you keep fighting!"..
I'm that kinda guy!!
all i have is passion, dedication willing to work hard, desire to learn....
need advice about the right direction to take....(most friends, family members don't know anything about finance!)
thanks for reading.
lol
You have a job at Société Générale? And you want to get in to high finance...make it happen!
Advice: don't do back office positions. It's about the role you play and the things you learn. Do you think the HR people and janitors at GS are going to break into IBD? No, they won't. But IBD people at lesser known boutiques have a non-zero chance.
I don't know if I can't read this because of the horrible formatting and spelling or if my brain actually just refuses to.
Holy cow, your grammar/spelling is AWFUL.
Man, I think you are bargaining for more than you can chew. At least when you'll look at the dark sky you will see everything clear and blue. The fact that you are working at Soc Gen is already removing those dark clouds in the sky for you. Take one step at a time, high finance will come to you itself if you work hard( it depends what kind of person you are). That does not mean do not aim for high finance now, keep your aimbtion in your mind and work slowly. GS, JPM are not the only companies that are high finance there are plenty of other companies that you can go for.
You made a mistake and you learnt from it and you move on.
Be contained with where you are now.
I wish I would have majored in "stochastics" in college
Do not beat yourself for not doing stochastics. There are plenty of people who have majored in Liberal Arts and end up investment banking:)

Cite this in your cold-emails/calls... :)
Learn English, this isn't a joke learn either standard American or Queen's English. If I saw this writing and I was on the hiring committee, I would not hire you, ever.
Thanks for all comments and suggestions..and for the sarcastic ones too(i've received many of those) I know my english/grammar is not upto the level of a bbc news presenter...and I'm working on it everyday.
I'm asking about which degree(MBA/MSF/finance related post graduate dergree??from which college??) to pursue after I graduate from engineering college get into high finance(in the shortest possibe time).
Since what you earn depends upon your knowledge and skills kindly suggest 1)the skills that i need to develop. 2)books to read.(I can get almost any book from internet for free) 3)courses to master. 4)what exams I should take up(gmat/toefl/gre..?)
