Chances at Soph SA 21

Hi Everyone!

I was looking for thoughts on what my chances are for sophomore BB internships next summer.

I’m a white male at a total Non-Target state school. I have a 3.93, am in an honors program and I’m on the board of 2 different clubs.

My HS senior summer was spent at a commercial bank interning in Lending. During my second semester I had an internship at a RE private debt fund. I also had a remote IB internship. This summer I will be back at the commercial bank with their finance division. I’m planning on going back to the RE company in the fall unless going to a growth equity fund would make a huge difference.

Any thoughts on what my chances are?

I'm not the original commentor, but you literally say in the title "Chances at Soph SA 21".

That doesn't sound anything like you're asking for advice on what to improve....

I was sophomore SA at a BB.

Based on how you've described yourself, you're not who these sophomore programs are intended for. Firms hire strong diversity candidates as sophomores to give them experience that allows them to compensate for disadvantages that they may face in this process, thereby leveling the playing field when they return for their junior internships in a class of often non-diverse hires. Unless you are extremely connected or truly an incredible candidate, you won't be considered for most BB sophomore programs because you simply don't qualify. My sophomore SA class had 20 kids- all from target schools, and only one non-diversity kid who was very connected and more qualified than most juniors.

There are tons of excellent internship programs that will take non-diversity sophomores, and if I were you, I would seek those out and treat it just as seriously as recruiting. In terms of banking, focus on junior year. Especially if your non-target doesn't have many alumni connections on the street, it may be an uphill battle. Work to build a network and talk to people from similar caliber schools who broke in. Study your technicals so that when the time comes for phone screens and superdays, you are confident and don't whiff the opportunity.

It is great to have an idea of what you want to do, but don't stress too much. You've got time. Enjoy your time in college and keep an open mind to things that might come your way. Best of luck
