Dorilton Capital Buys Williams F1?

Sad to see the last family-owned F1 team go, but I guess it had to be done for Williams to try and compete with the midfield. I personally am curious as to how Dorilton is supposed to turnaround Williams, given that no one at the firm has a racing background and the fact that an F1 team isn't the typical Industrials/Healthcare that the firm focuses on. The deal itself is also interesting since there's no way Williams provides the necessary cash flow for a LBO, but Dorilton acquired the firm outright instead of a minority growth equity stake. What are y'alls thoughts on this?

Williams is still firmly at the very back of the grid.  The new regulations next year will help them for sure, but they'll still be years behind the Red Bulls and Mercedes.  I'm sure Frank and Claire will still be a part of the team moving forward so the family feel won't be completely lost.  If the team gets better over the next few years it may end up being a good deal for Dorilton.  Mercedes' team is apparently worth $1.3 billion, so the valuations for some of the up-and-coming midfield teams have a ton of room to grow.

Russell won't stay. He's been a Merc junior driver most of his life and was a GP2 champion. Drivers like that won't settle for being at the back of the grid even if that team was on a fresh start financially since their goals are going to be winning a WDC as soon as possible. There's also the personal angle for him as the F1 driver class from his year are in a RBR car (Albon) and in a McLaren (Norris) which puts them more or less in podium contention (regardless of whether or not they've been able to get one ahem..Alex)

can't exactly blame Alex lol. No easy feat being Max's teammate, also shows you exactly how good Ricciardo was in his day

Dorilton is a family office right?

Hard to believe they did an LBO on this one, seems more likely that the family behind the family office wanted to get into F1 without plastering their name. Just my assumption though.

I'm on season 2 of the Netflix F1 show after not knowing anything about F1 and I have to say it's pretty riveting.

what i dont understand is why people "support" Hamilton / Mercedes or the equivalent in Tennis (Federer?) when they win like 95% of the time. like where is the drama etc. seems like it would get boring. plus whats the connection. id atleast try find something in common with someone (e.g. shared background / culture etc) and support them.

Absolutely. Lots of personalities, surprises, and it's highly technical too so it keeps it interesting. The next race is next Sunday in Belgium, but would definitely recommend watching both seasons of Drive to Survive to get up to speed, sprinkle in some YouTube videos, and then you'll be able to appreciate that challenge, drama, and complexity of the sport. Been loving it since getting into it about 3 months ago. SO is into it as well, who would've thought!

It is what it is.

I have a car but don't consider myself a car guy at all, though I like the concept of racing overall. I found it pretty interesting, and as @RealEstateNerd said, the personalities and surprises are what made it interesting. It is much more technical than I would have thought, but that's interesting in and off itself too.

I am happy to see Williams stay. A lot of bad luck these past few years, but now with a solid backing hopefully they can get back to winning ways in 2022. It will be interesting if Russell will stay with the team now that they have more funds. Part of me wants him to stay with Williams as they will have a great driver going into 2022 but part of me also wants him fighting at the top with others in his class(Albon and Norris). Only time will tell.

I think unless Williams takes a huge step next year in terms of their competitiveness, he won't be rejoining.  If any driver on the grid had the choice between driving, at its absolute best (by next season anyways), a midfield car in Williams versus the car that's one every year since 2014 (and likely this one too), they're choosing the latter all day.  As if the car isn't enough, Bottas makes €9 million as a secondary driver to Lewis, while Russell makes about €160,000 (reported anyways) as the Williams lead.
