Finding roommates and apartments in Murray Hill/Kips Bay

Starting as a first-year IB analyst in July and having a little trouble with housing.

I was supposed to rent with friends but they ended up taking an extra semester. How does one go about finding roommates?

Regarding finding an apartment, how far in advance and what sites are good to use? Looking to find a 3 BR for about $4500 in Kips Bay/Murray Hill.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

...Also if you’re reasonably neat, easygoing, like high water pressure, go out now and then, and not a weirdo, hmu.

These areas are kind of boring - why did you choose them? Is your office within walking distance or something?

Oh ok - yeah Craigslist should be of help. You could either look for a place that has an open spot or post about finding roommates and all looking for a place together.

I've done both in NYC. One year, 3 alumni and I got a 4 bedroom in the East Village and it was sick. Great times. 2 guys moved out and I went back to Craigslist and posted an ad interviewing only girls for 2 slots open in the place. My roommate and I interviewed 20-30+ girls in a lengthy search for the perfect roommates. That was an interesting year as well.

When I first moved to NYC years ago (I don't live there anymore), I interviewed a bunch of places and ended up getting a place with two french chicks in UES on 65th as my building was in midtown on 57th. I'd have to say this was one of the more boring years living in UES and found it dull.

I think you should focus more on living on the green/orange/yellow line (whatever goes to your work) in a cool area over Murray Hill, but still on the eastsid - like East Village, LES, SoHo. There will be more cool bars and restaurants around and I think its nicer to live in a chill place/location and have a short commute to work than living near work.

Just remember that you have the opportunity to vet out a lot of places. Take your time to see as many places as possible and meet as many people as possible. NYC housing has a lot of volume, so use it to your advantage. But, when you find the perfect place, be ready to have a few multiples of the monthly rent for closing fees from everyone immediately. This is imperative. Be ready to close as some places go fast

In the past, I have refrained from saying some things on here, but now feel that this story is appropriate. For a warning and for people moving to new lives and big cities.

There is a key rule that men have adopted across many lands and time:

a) Don't stick your dick in crazy

It will fuck you up in a major way once you step up to the big leagues, to the big cities, and your new roles in corporate or wherever. Your personal reputation is at stake. Chicks will pull the most terrorist shit on you if you're somehow on their bad side and laws can sometimes not matter in the interest of getting 'payback' or 'revenge'. Hell hath no fury on a woman scorned, as they say.

But, what is scorning a woman, you may ask? Well, it could be anything. It could be something that you thought was good and she thinks is bad, or that you 'purposely went out of your way to do something against her'. Bro, crazy chicks are on another level. Lets go to some real actions that can take place in the realm of crazy.

Jail. Yes - jail. Surprise motherfucker, you didn't do shit and you're in the cell. Don't think this could happen to you as you did nothing against the law? Think again. This chick is so crazy that because you did not give her attention, she calls 911 to perjure herself in front of a policeman on the scene to report domestic issues.

In NY state, there is a law that says if any woman claims a domestic issue, the domestic male has to be arrested immediately for processing. She claimed harassment. She said to the police that I called her 3+ times a day for 2 weeks and she was feeling threatened by this.

How many motherfucking times did I call that bitch in 2 weeks? None. Zero. Her dumb ass lied about something as easy to provide evidence as phone records. So eventually I got off, but not after being arrested and going to 6 months of trials and waiting for the case to appear every month before a judge to hear that 'the prosecution still has not accepted the evidence' and still wanted to prosecute me. To the next month.

This all came up because we were roommates and when I moved into that place she said she was a lesbian (so thought it would be cool), but then something came up and her girlfriend and her both came onto me at the same time and then I hooked up with her once after that and then she slowly started to get crazier. She apparently wasn't a lesbian, but it was some secret. What made things much worse was that I really didn't want to hook up with this chick anymore and would go out in the city without 'telling her' I was going somewhere and was rejecting her by locking my door at night and one night she started banging on the door wanting to fuck and I was just straight shutting her down.

I guess something snapped for her one night. She had a different Brazilian girlfriend over that night and I was on the roof deck of the building at the time with a friend and got cuffed on the roof deck of my building by 2 cops. I hadn't even seen that chick in days and hadn't called her in weeks. I didn't have my wallet on me, only my ID and $10 and the cops wouldn't let me grab my wallet or phone or anything. I got out 24hrs later in the middle of the night in the lower part of Manhattan. I bought an orange and was down to like $7. There was a restraining order on me and I wasn't allowed back into my apartment. So all I had was the shirt on my back and $7 and a friend on 55th that my answer his buzzer to let me stay there. I walked all the way up to 55th just fucking hoping that he would answer. If not, I had $7 and stuck in the city without a legal chance to get back to my apartment for weeks. I had to get a special 'time window' to remove my things from that apartment, overseen by policeman.

I hit the buzzer and just prayed. Door buzzed open. Thank God. He let me in and gave me a big wtf sleepyface to me as it was like a Thursday at 4:10 am and then let me crash at his studio - I had to sleep on the floor.

Welcome to NYC. Don't stick your dick in crazy, kids.

Jesus Christ that's insane. Definitely something to be cognizant about. I have two friends with similar stories, they're fine now but it was scary for a time. Don't stick your dick in crazy.

Yeah, just be careful who you become involved with. Looking for roommates and putting a lot of emphasis on the process of just seeing a lot of places or people will reap rewards.

I've had a few other places that worked out fine with girls. I even accidentally hooked up some as well maybe, but it was just ok crazy. Like a little crazy. Not cops are here crazy.

I tried to but my lawyer said that prosecution is not that interested in pursuing false accusation cases. I wanted to at least speak out in the final hearing to the judge and prosecutor, but my lawyer advised against it. He said just put her out of your life and drop it.

It outraged me greatly that they didn’t want to charge her with perjury, but that’s how it is apparently.

She never showed up to court. I had to travel to NYC once a month for 6 month (I didn’t live in the city anymore) and suit up and go to court and everything. It was a major pain in the ass.

She never showed up to court and also refused to drop charges. A real winner.

NYC is very competitive in the apartments market. I'd go there early-mid June and look at buildings. Have everything you'll need in hand (offer letters showing salaries, social security for all 3 roommates, first month's rent/application fees) many apartments lease in a few days. If you see one that works, apply immediately. Broker's fees are kind of in limbo right now but you may also need to pay that (usually another month's rent)

StreetEasy is the gold standard for NYC apartments. FB/Craigslist might have some more casual listings, FB especially you may be able to find someone who already has an apartment and needs a roommate (way easier than trying to find roommates and then an apartment)
