They gave me a call last week regarding why my gpa fell because I transferred schools, and they said I should hear back by the end of the week, but it is now Monday and havent heard anything.

True point, I have a combined gpa on my resume, because one of my gpas is much lower, although I disclosed both gpas on the employment application. I'm just wondering if it's an issue.. I guess I'll wait and see.

i would just wait patiently.

let us know what happened.

Don't worry. They likely saw something that they couldn't iron out, gave you a call for an explanation, and then moved on.

I think it is important to take a step back and consider the objective of the background check. It is not worth GS's (or any other firm's) time or money to interview a slew of people, pick out the best ones, then hand out offers to the best ones, and then have them accept the offer, and then have them fill out a 20 page document with endless info so the firm can look for ways to ding them, rescind offers, and throw the firm back a few steps. Even if the grunt checking labor is outsourced, HR needs to do everything else.

The background checks are really just to make sure that you did not blatantly lie on your application. They care most about the things that are easy to claim, but hard to substantiate if a lie: criminal record, school attended, GPA, and professional experience. They'll run a background check, request a formal transcript, and call old bosses to make sure you actually worked there. If those check out, you're fine.

Hi Banker4lyfe, Good to know that you finally got approved. Just wondering how long the process took for you to get officially cleared? I'm asking cuz I'm in the same situation - submitted my application 3 weeks ago and was told by HR that the process might take up to 4 weeks cuz I'm from a foreign country. Never got contacted for any question or any additional document either.

Major thanks!

Did they make you submit things like transcript, proof of employment at previous places, etc. or is that done on their end?

They should only make you sign and scan over a waiver to allow them access to your transcripts and all your other information they need. They will then go about obtaining whatever they need on their own and if they have problems they'll reach out to you for whatever reason.

I'm curious, do other BBs like GS actually have their HR reach out to incoming 1st years to let them know they "passed" the background check?

All I did was give my info, social security number, and consent in the beginning of 2014. A few weeks ago I got my signing bonus and some training materials in the mail. Even though I was never explicitly notified, I assume they wouldn't cut me a check unless that whole process was already completed.

Just give your HR contact a call and check in with her regarding your status. I mean this isn't a complicated process. Most banks outsource this work to LexisNexus or other firms and sometimes they need some assistance in verifying what you have on your resume.

There could be one potential problem. I am not sure whether it could cause a problem. That is, my undergraduate degree is from China. I got a Thermal Engineering degree from the School of Mechanical Engineering. However, the my job application, there is no option for Thermal Engineering 'cause this is not a typical degree name. So I selected Mechanical Engineering as my undergraduate degree. Technically, Thermal Engineering is part of Mechanical Engineering. Do you think this could cause a problem?

Hey guys, I am at the end of the 4th week of my background check with an investment banking firm; they've hit a couple of blips in the road with my background check. Initially couldn't verify employment for one of my previous employer (I provided a w2 to confirm) and recently got a call saying I over estimated my salary by $3k...I explained but was told it would have to be elevated for approval. I haven't heard anything since, but went into the application portal and my status was changed from "Interviewing" to "under review". Anyone know what that means? Thanks for your help!

hey! I was wondering... when you got your GS SA acceptance offer... how long did it take them to ask you for your transcript?

if I had my gpa as 3.8 but on my transcript says 3.74 will they rescind my offer now?

Well you lied, so it’s certainly possible.

They never asked me for my transcripts, the background check company contacts the school to get a copy. I doubt they would rescind your offer but you will probably get a phone call where you will need to explain why you said 3.8 as opposed to 3.74.

anyone have thoughts on my post above?

This thread is five years old, so it’s unlikely you’ll get a response from the OP. There’s nothing you can do at this point. Fortunately for you, if you’re a woman, you’ll probably be a beneficiary of the almighty corporate-politics pussy-pass in this scenario (no sarcasm or dickishness intended; just keeping it real).

Regardless, why lie? Furthermore, why lie about something that is so easily verifiable?
