Goldman sachs Background check now going on for 4 weeks
it has been a total of 4 weeks since I submitted my employee application on HRworkways, but I have yet to still hear back. Is this a bad sign?

Why don't you just ask what the delay is?
They gave me a call last week regarding why my gpa fell because I transferred schools, and they said I should hear back by the end of the week, but it is now Monday and havent heard anything.
all i hear are some bells going ding ding ding!
Why would I get dinged if I disclosed everything in my employment application?
Could they be waiting on the results of something like a police check/employment verification/academic enrolment records that are taking a while?
I hope its something related to that, because if my grades were an issue wouldn't I already be rescinded? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Your grades won't be an issue unless you lied about your GPA/grades. If you disclosed your GPA correctly and got the job offer, I don't see how grades would be an issue.
True point, I have a combined gpa on my resume, because one of my gpas is much lower, although I disclosed both gpas on the employment application. I'm just wondering if it's an issue.. I guess I'll wait and see.
I think they would have told you if it was an issue when they called about your GPA, but that's just my best guess.
i would just wait patiently.
let us know what happened.
Ding.
I don't get how is this a ding. Isn't no news good news?
Yeah how would that be a ding?
Don't worry. They likely saw something that they couldn't iron out, gave you a call for an explanation, and then moved on.
I think it is important to take a step back and consider the objective of the background check. It is not worth GS's (or any other firm's) time or money to interview a slew of people, pick out the best ones, then hand out offers to the best ones, and then have them accept the offer, and then have them fill out a 20 page document with endless info so the firm can look for ways to ding them, rescind offers, and throw the firm back a few steps. Even if the grunt checking labor is outsourced, HR needs to do everything else.
The background checks are really just to make sure that you did not blatantly lie on your application. They care most about the things that are easy to claim, but hard to substantiate if a lie: criminal record, school attended, GPA, and professional experience. They'll run a background check, request a formal transcript, and call old bosses to make sure you actually worked there. If those check out, you're fine.
If your GPA was a real issue you wouldn't have gotten an interview.

Just got PRELIMINARY APPROVAL
You'll be fine
You'll be fine
Does preliminary approval mean I'm good to go?
i don't understand how you got an offer from DEH GOLDMAN SECHZ when you need to be spoon fed everything.

Hi Banker4lyfe, Good to know that you finally got approved. Just wondering how long the process took for you to get officially cleared? I'm asking cuz I'm in the same situation - submitted my application 3 weeks ago and was told by HR that the process might take up to 4 weeks cuz I'm from a foreign country. Never got contacted for any question or any additional document either.
Major thanks!
hey!!!! was jw - how long did it take for GS to ask for your transcripts after you got the SA offer? Are you interning in NYC? :)
took me 5 weeks to get preliminary approval. That's pretty standard I think especially if your doing it for SA.
Did they make you submit things like transcript, proof of employment at previous places, etc. or is that done on their end?
Hmm the BB that I signed with did not have anywhere listed on the offer that allows them to waive and have my school release transcripts. Unless I am reading it wrong, but it doesn't list it. Only things it list relevant to a background check, is that I must pass a pre and post employment screening. That is all.
you'll be fine. bankers make the decision, HR just process.
I'm curious, do other BBs like GS actually have their HR reach out to incoming 1st years to let them know they "passed" the background check?
All I did was give my info, social security number, and consent in the beginning of 2014. A few weeks ago I got my signing bonus and some training materials in the mail. Even though I was never explicitly notified, I assume they wouldn't cut me a check unless that whole process was already completed.
Out of curiousity, do they do a medical records check? Of past medical history?
Just give your HR contact a call and check in with her regarding your status. I mean this isn't a complicated process. Most banks outsource this work to LexisNexus or other firms and sometimes they need some assistance in verifying what you have on your resume.
How long do you have to wait after preliminary approval does hr call?
My situation is exactly the same now. It has been 4 full weeks. The background check is still not clear...
Yea their background checks take a while same was for me. Only thing I might recommend checking is to make sure they have the drug screen info; they never received mine from the clinic so I had to resend the documents.
Apart from that you gucci.
There could be one potential problem. I am not sure whether it could cause a problem. That is, my undergraduate degree is from China. I got a Thermal Engineering degree from the School of Mechanical Engineering. However, the my job application, there is no option for Thermal Engineering 'cause this is not a typical degree name. So I selected Mechanical Engineering as my undergraduate degree. Technically, Thermal Engineering is part of Mechanical Engineering. Do you think this could cause a problem?
mine lasted 9 weeks chill, as long as you've been honest with everything you don't need to panic.
Hi, I wanted to ask how long after you had preliminary approval, you were approved/reached out to in order to move forward with the process?
Just want to update that, my background was cleared today. Exactly 4 weeks!
told ya not to worry
bump
Hi, I wanted to ask you guys how long after you had preliminary approval, you were approved/reached out to in order to move forward with the process?
Hey guys, I am at the end of the 4th week of my background check with an investment banking firm; they've hit a couple of blips in the road with my background check. Initially couldn't verify employment for one of my previous employer (I provided a w2 to confirm) and recently got a call saying I over estimated my salary by $3k...I explained but was told it would have to be elevated for approval. I haven't heard anything since, but went into the application portal and my status was changed from "Interviewing" to "under review". Anyone know what that means? Thanks for your help!
hey! I was wondering... when you got your GS SA acceptance offer... how long did it take them to ask you for your transcript?
if I had my gpa as 3.8 but on my transcript says 3.74 will they rescind my offer now?
Well you lied, so it’s certainly possible.
They never asked me for my transcripts, the background check company contacts the school to get a copy. I doubt they would rescind your offer but you will probably get a phone call where you will need to explain why you said 3.8 as opposed to 3.74.
anyone have thoughts on my post above?
thanks for this. okay did you have to sign a form that allowed them to access your transcripts...? also what was the timeframe for this? did they ask for this right when you got your offer or a few months before you started the internship? thanks! beffa
oh really? I am so scared what should I do?
hey!! what gpa did you have on your resume vs. what you actually had? we can PM also!! banker4lyfe
This thread is five years old, so it’s unlikely you’ll get a response from the OP. There’s nothing you can do at this point. Fortunately for you, if you’re a woman, you’ll probably be a beneficiary of the almighty corporate-politics pussy-pass in this scenario (no sarcasm or dickishness intended; just keeping it real).
Regardless, why lie? Furthermore, why lie about something that is so easily verifiable?
