Goldman Sachs Spring Internship London
Hey monkeys,
I am a first year student, currently doing my bachelor in economics in Vienna, Austria (took the finance concentration, though you can't really say it is a major, things work differently in the Austrian system).
I am very interested in applying to GS spring program which is somewhat targeted at people that just started with university, if I understood this correctly.
Does anyone have some information about getting into this program (e.g. is there a lot of competition, compared to other internships in the industry) or some general experiences?
Also, do you know of any similar programs (suitable for a first year student) in Europe (Frankfurt or London)?
Greetings and thanks in advance.
I also just found a programme from Nomura, which is called "2011 Explore Nomura Programme - London" and basically just lasts 4 days, any experience with that, do you think one could put this up on a resume without looking stupid?

Competition is very fierce for spring programmes, as you are mainly competing with students from the top UK universities (Oxbridge, LSE). The route is Spring Intern (First Year)-> Summer Intern (Penultimate Year) -> Full Time. You get the offer for the next step if you are a top performer during the respective internship.
I will also apply.
All the BBs have this type of Spring programmes.
Problem with GS is that the recruitment process (at least for people studying outside the UK) is quite silly. If you are lucky, you will have a phone interview, which is basically confirming your offer, so make sure that you pimp your CV as much as possible and spell check your CL a hundred times.
You should definetly apply, Goldman is Goldman, but make sure that you apply to the other top banks as well (MS, JP, DB, CS).
Good luck!
Do you think a student with his profile could have any possibility if he applied also to BX m&a, lazard, perella, moelis, rotschild, grenhill and the such? Or are those elite boutiques more oxbridge-only oriented?
edit: I'm talking about london, obviously.
I think all the big names in IB in London are somehow more oriented to Oxbridge/LSE, but this does not mean that a student from continental europe could not get the same internships. Provided he has related experience, good grades, EC's etc.
But I think for a continental student, especially in his first year, its is much easier to get into the local branches in Frankfurt and Zurich.
Take this with a graint of salt because I'm a first year student at a continental Europe target university, so I'd like to hear somebody how has more experience in Europe. I think its definitely worth trying to get into elite boutiques etc in your first year, at least thats what I will try to do to fill up the 2 months after my summer exams and before I start my BB internship in Frankfurt.

I am wondering if people who apply to these spring programs actually have any work experience (e.g. previous internships) already?
Because in continental europe, especially in Austria, lots of banks (although there are no real IBs, just retail stuff and corporate stuff) do take interns in the summer months, even if they just started university. I took one of those internships at UniCredit (in it's "corporate and investment banking" division, big bank in Europe but doesn't mean shit from an investmentbanking perspective I guess?) and I would like to know if I could have an edge over competitors from, say the UK, because it is not normal to have any internship experience as a freshman there (don't know about that though, that's what I am asking basically)?
Yeah, I'm in the same situation. I did an internship with a M&A boutique in Frankfurt before I started at university. Hope this will give us some edge over the usual AAA a-level student from oxbridge.. But we will see.
Yeah, let's hope so :)
Would you mind telling me which university you go to? I only know from a friend in St.Gallen that he got into a spring program and a summer internship in London quite easily.
Won't be able to apply until 26. November though, have big exams coming up, hope that not all place are already filled up by then, most of the programs state early january as application deadline but mention that they review incoming applications as they come in...
I am also attending a company presentation by Nomura tomorrow, but I don't really know if I can approach these guys about the spring program, guess they are mostly there to talk about SA positions.
