How to break into investment banking for non experienced
hi,
I'm a recent graduate who did not get a chance to do IB internships in college. currently working as a revenue analyst for an insurance company. my goal is to be in investment banking but my networking and lack of experience aren't helping. I was thinking of doing this job while I study for the GMAT and then go to graduate school for a masters in finance with a focus in investment analysis. what do you all think? anyone been where I been? anyone got any tips for me? people told me to give up and be in the corporate finance field but that's just not me
Hi Kay3dly, check out these threads:
Hope that helps.
thank you.. would anyone know if i would be able to land an investment banking internship if i were to go for my mba, like during my time completing it?
Try to get a job in the back office and move your way up from there while getting a MBA. Unless you go to Top 20 - 25 MBA, then you may have a shot.
is that really possible? I had people shut me down whenever I mention trying to work my way in through the back office. because i had a few offers for those but i choose the financial analyst route. Thanks for getting back to me btw
It's all what you make of. You should definitely pursue a MBA, while you work your way up. Just expect to take you 10 years. One of my MD now worked from back office and it took him 8 years to move from a back office role into front office role.
1) Kay3dly There is a ton of info on this site. Would recommend doing some legwork first as these types of questions have been discussed hundreds of times. Just you asking "would anyone know if i would be able to land an investment banking internship if i were to go for my mba, like during my time completing it?" shows you've down 0 diligence at all on IB.
2) Advice given to you by Bill Stern @ Axe Cap is fucking terrible. Join BO and then pursue an MBA? 10 year plan just to break into IB? Are you fucking serious? Better advice is to try working in a more relevant field in finance, whether that be Big 4 TAS, corp. fin., or a boutique IB firm. Work in that role for a couple of years, then either try to lateral or then you get an MBA and join IB as an associate. Max 5 years. I swear to god some of the shit that kid has been spewing on this site.
Isn't that the same advice that I gave him, you either do a MBA at top 25-30. Or you can find yourself working in the BO for 10 years before getting into FO. I'm letting him know the two options that he has. At least I'm letting him know that breaking into a FO from a BO role is possible... You do a MBA part time while you work in BO probably speed up the process a bit. When did I ask him to do BO and then pursue a MBA...
