IB and PE in Atlanta

New to the forum, but just wondering how many of you work in PE/IB in Atlanta. I tried searching but the only good thread that turned up was a few years old. My whole family lives in New York and most work in law and medicine with a few bankers but we moved to Atlanta when my dad joined a new law firm and I go to school in Georgia. I've heard that Charlotte is the capital of banking in the south, but now that I live in Atlanta I don't really want to move anywhere else; low cost of living, a few hours from the beach, a few hours from the mountain, and decent weather year round. I;m finishing my sophomore year of college this spring and should maintain my 3.7. So just curious as to everyone's knowledge of how big banking and PE is in Atlanta. Let me know

I know a lot of ATL banking folks. SunTrust is the 'biggest' for banking around there, but there's actually a lot of very good boutiques and BBs who have offices in ATL but don't advertise it too much.

  • BarCap - Small IBD office
  • JPM - Small IBD Office
  • Blackstone - Believe this is PE
  • MS Real Estate PE
  • KBW - I think research and S&T
  • Sandler O'Niel - I think research and banking

These are the only ones I know of that are 'NYC' shops and pay street etc.. That said, none of these places are coming onto UGA or GA Tech campus to recruit, I believe SunTrust and other small ATL boutiques are the only ones who do that. You'll need to network for the above shops.

BX Atlanta definitely does M&A. I don't think they do any PE down there.

BX Atl is M&A. Don't know about the JPM office, believe it's just corporate JP and commercial banking / re they have in Atl.

Bunch of boutiques in the area, mostly smaller 5-20 guy firms. Usually helps to be from a southern school to break in. It's a very tightly knit community due to its size.

They do all mostly recruit at the big southern schools - UNC, Wake Forest, Duke, UVA, Washington & Lee, UGA, Ga Tech, Emory. This is for analysts, though, MBA's are much less diverse for schools but usually kids who were from some of those southern schools originally.

Thanks for your input. Yeah it seems like Sun Trust is the big one down here. There are a BB offices but I don't really know how big they are. Someone said they were very small, like 5-10 employees. There a lot of boutiques but from what I've heard they are almost impossible to break into unless you network like crazy.

Most of those BBs are just 2-5 person offices and dont hire interns. (Ive cold called) But maybe if you have experience, you will have a chance. Also, the big firm is Roark, I believe they just raised a billion dollar fund too

if you are trying to make fun of GSU, think again. Ken Lewis of BoA went for MBA there.

MBAs/Masters degrees are weird though - if you see a guy high up in a company with a shitty MBA, chances are he just had to get it to advance in the company, so he went the cheapest/most convenient route possible.

State as an undergrad school is a joke.

MM IB -> Corporate Development -> Strategic Finance

Whats your opinion on the pedigree of an MBA program if you are looking to stay in Atlanta? Say you desire to remain in Atlanta long-term and wish take a career that offers better work-life balance than IB/Consulting would you actually need a M7 mba or is an Emory MBA enough to open all doors here? Not sure how much of a leg-up you would have at say suntrust, home depot, etc if your mba is from Duke vs UVA vs Emory vs Wharton.

For staying in Atlanta, Emory is the obv choice for MBA, there will be so many alumni in the area too

Believe it or not, Georgia Tech's MBA has been climbing in the rankings, no, they are not a top MBA, but for Atlanta, it is respectable

Hey what are my chances in Atlanta with a BBA from UT-McCombs?
Dunno if any atlanta banks recruit from McCombs, but, in general, Emory rules Atlanta, with a sprinkling of GTech.

As in all situations, networking is gonna make your resume stand out among the masses.
