If you could've gone to any undergrad college?
What course at what college would you have done if it was completely up to you?
my top 3:
1) Economics at Harvard
2) Economics at Stanford
3) Business at Wharton

Basket weaving @ Princeton -> anything
XD
Harvard or Stanford.. Probably Stanford.. Both Econ as well
University of North Carolina, University of Texas, UCLA, or USC. Assuming tuition is reasonable.
My list is similiar.
1) Women's Studies at ASU 2) Sports Medicene at UC Santa Barbara 3) Jewish Studies at Baruch
Christ, I didn't read the thread and you had already beaten me to it
Economics at Harvard is such a huge department, it's difficult to stand out. I'd definitely take Harvard but I'd probably choose a different major, no idea what.
Also wouldn't mind Econ at Princeton. Or, for random kicks, Linguistics at Yale. I'm not a West Coast lover so no Stanford for me.
Womens studies at USC
maybe Arizona State as a safety
Georgetown SFS Public Policy at Princeton Philosophy at Yale
If only money wasn't ever a problem.
Rationale behind my choices: A global perspective in terms of subjects (PPE/History) and colleagues is very important to me (not in a B-School way, but in a "have lived a full life" way) and solid academics. I would combine any option with a study abroad in Europe/USA.
Top Choices: - Politics, Psychology & Sociology at Cambridge (would take a paper in econ as well)... There's something about cute Cambridge girls... - Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford
2nd Group of Choices: - The equivalent of PPE or Economics (with a minor in history) at a top US school with a strong identity and solid academics Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Columbia or MIT, etc... I really like that Columbia has the added benefit of the location. - Economics and Economic History at the LSE - Finance at Wharton (honestly, how could I not include this?)
Regrettably, I never applied to any of these schools as I was pretty aimless and anti the idea of working for anything government related/influenced at that point and didn't realise what kind of options were available to young people; I was great at maths and physics in school but circumstances and lack of direction led me to studying business instead. Luckily I found out about economics & finance and the rest is history.
I have been fortunate to have had a fabulously international career so far. Will try to fit in some non-business academics during my contemplated MBA/MFin vacation, or an extended academic stay if I manage to net 7 figures this year - one can hope!
1) mgt science/math MIT 2) business/math UPenn 3) Commerce/math UVA
USC or Texas would be my top choices.
I'm happy where I'm at. There's definitely a benefit to knowing what you want to do before you apply for college.
Econ at Columbia
deleted
Julliard for Drama or Music Caltech for Astronomy or Physics Le Cordon Bleu (Paris campus)
Could not apply to any because I'm not a U.S. Citizen.
Only other schools I would have considered:
1) Naval Academy 2) MIT
I would have also audited "Handjobs: The Art and Science" at ASU each summer.
Wow you guys have some fucked up priorities.
USC or Texas. Maybe Vandy.
Willingly choosing trollish Ivy girls? Not for me.
Management Science and Engineering major, Computer Science minor - Stanford
Government - Harvard
Economics with finance certificate - Princeton
Anything at ASU
I would have to say:
United States Air Force Acad. Enginnering Columbia Econ Harvard Econ
I'd probably say:
-Econ at Stanford, Columbia or Duke -Petroleum Enguneering at UT Austin -Maybe even Film at USC.
Economics at Columbia or Yale
lol. if you guys actually like pure econ--perspective from a current student--columbia's moving away from it everyday. the business-school influence on the department is starting to get insane. it's actually becoming more 'business economics' than 'economics'.
Probably math and econ at Pomona.
Honestly? BHP Finance/Petroleum Engineering at UT-Austin.
USAF would be a dream.
Event Planning at FSU
Any class tim tebow took in his family, youth and community sciences major at Florida.
just curious,
why does everyone here want to major in econ?? is it for enjoyment of econ, or for job opportunities?
Solid blend between quantitative coursework (game theory, econometrics, time series analysis) and writing intensive courses. Emphasis on theory, history and practical applications. Deriving some of the formulas in Macro is sexy as hell. Lots of modern developments in the field (Garch/Arch weren't even around until the 80s). Plenty of room for new discoveries/advances.
Also, I feel like econ majors are much more pleasant to be around than others.
I see. however, i feel that many employers really don't value an Econ degree that much. I am an econ major and some interviewers seemed to discount my academic credentials or marketability because they thought it wasn't very practical nor quantitative enough...
for generic banking or consulting, econ does fine. for quant heavy jobs, i don't think econ degree is very marketable/ useful.
If salary wasn't an issue after graduation these would be my choices. University of Hawaii- Oceanography or geology (study volcanos and rainforest) University of Sydney- Marine biology (study dolphins/sharks) University of New Zealand-Auckland - Astronomy Any reputable medical school in Columbia/Peru/Ecuador/Brazil etc... (Go to the amazon rainforest and invent new medications from undiscovered plants)
Hands down, PPE at Oxford (Politics, Philosphy & Economics).
Nothing comes close.
HBS MBA while in HS
actually, come to think of it, econ at LSE
the coursework is NASTY and london is sick
Yea other than money, and primary interests, I would want to learn more about NPO's and create a top multinational NPO HQ in Hawaii, paris, london or somewhere in Spain... I may do that after a while of working on the Street.
I'd go to a party school that still gets top recruiting - UCLA, Penn State (Nittany fund, obviously), Michigan, UNC, or Indiana (IB workshop). Save the serious-ness for business school (HBS or Stanford)
Not OSU :(
FisherFutures
This is a great idea. Michigan or UNC are good schools for IB and consulting OCR, yet they are very fun schools to attend. The only problem with these schools is that if you're out of state, tuition is fucking ridiculous and they don't give you any fin aid.
Actually OOS at UNC might be the best bargain in the country. I'd include UVA in that bunch too.
Ya this question depends on what perspective you're answering from. If I had the mindset I do now I would probably like to attend MIT course 18 with computer science. When I was just entering school probably would have been great to go to UCLA for econ so i could be more lazy and party with prospects afterwards.
Some combo of Econ-Math-Computer Science at UChicago.
Also, as someone from one of the party schools that gets listed in these kinds of threads, I can tell you first hand that it can be pretty fun, but gets fucking depressing really, really quickly if even average intelligence is something you value in an acquaintance.
Which is why balance between academics and social atmosphere is essential. Some schools that come to mind-- Dartmouth, Northwestern, Duke, Berkeley, Michigan, Stanford, etc.
Probably computer science/math at Stanford... because it's probably in the best location for a comp sci major while maybe even being the best at comp sci
Besides for that, I can't really think of another school that I would pick over Michigan (where I am now) for computer science + math considering the fact that I'm instate and our rankings (in comp sci) compared to most other Ivy Leagues and schools that have higher prestige don't really have that big of a difference to make me want to travel to another side of the country... Princeton and Berkeley maybe, but I really like it here, I'm proud to be a Wolverine and if you have a problem with that you can s my d
the idea of having HYP or M on my resume sounds pretty damn enticing, but MIT and Princeton are the only schools with higher ranked comp sci departments and I really want to go for something quantitative in undergrad, but I don't know if I would fit in at an Ivy League school
Stanford is probably my most respected school though even considering Harvard's prestige, they're all around fantastic academically and they seem to have a good social scene... grad school hopefully! ha
Actually I do have a problem with you and your wolverines so yea I will gladly suck your dick..
Hahahahahahahaha. Oh, Ambition
http://www.youtube.com/embed/wXw6znXPfy4
well, that doesn't sound like you have a problem with me at all...
asl?
Just have to say........ go bucks you stupid wolverine :P
When I applied to undergrad Amherst and Brown were my favorite. Still love them and hope my kids apply when I get around to making them.
I ended up getting into Colgate, Vassar, and UF. I live in Florida so I was planning on going to UF but ended up switching to a smaller liberal arts school in Florida with some reputation but still non-target. I wanted to go to a small school with good professors and small class sizes. I valued being able to be close with professors. It made recommendations very easy. My high school was pretty big (3000+) so it was nice to go to a school smaller than that.
In retrospect, if money were no issue I would have gone to Colgate. But it was, so I went to the small LAC in Florida on a 75% ride (plus scholarships from the state). It's a solid network if/when I ever move back to FL.
Econ at Princeton (hell anything at Princeton), although I am happy where I am.
Intellectual atmosphere there is unbeatable. Also, the "ruralness" and vastness of the campus is great. Although, I don't understand how kids are getting into school these days. Even my current school is approaching a sub-10% admit rate for RD. People must just be applying everywhere all over the top 15 / top 20 hoping for a bite.
Princeton has notorious grade deflation... I have a buddy from my high school who graduated with 2.9 in Econ from Princeton last year, and he's still unemployed.
he told me curves are fucking brutal at Princeton and girls are busted. I don't think it is the most fun college experience you can have.
I would rather attend U Michigan, UVA, or UNC type of school and get 3.6+ GPA easier and have a blast, than go through 4 years of misery at a school like Princeton. You only get to go to college once. (hopefully)
True. Really any school is what you make of it though. There are decent / good looking people everywhere, although certainly UNC has more good looking chicks than MIT. My school is known for competitiveness and academics, but even here it can be fun. Sure, you won't be having a blast with hot sorority chicks every night, but you can have some great intellectual conversations etc. It's a different kind of fun.
Although, UVA would be pretty sweet too (location / student body / academics / atmosphere seem great).
sTaNfOrD bRaH
which brings me to another thing that I like about Michigan (and I'm assuming OSU is the same)... school spirit. It's nice going to a school that you actually like for once (I went to Catholic schools from kindergarten to 12th grade).
I agree most Midwestern schools are heavy into football which really embraces that whole school spirit thing (like a overgrown high school except the jocks are not like 80% of the school)
you are all such queers.
Seriously, pour gas on yourself and light a match
Put on live feed to WSO, kthxbai
Am I melvvvar? Am I??
cough baboon
Nothing wrong with being queer.
Can we get some rankings on this thread???
Stanford - girls, climate, prestige.
You mean Stanford girls? :-O
But, yeah, Stanford is one heck of a school. Close to perfection in just about every category.
Can someone post a ranking of most prestigious colleges with hot girls?
Wharton is not a college, and Penn girls are ugly as hell. Columbia and Brown have some decent looking people. Especially Columbia. ;)
Cal is probably the most busted campus I've ever been to. Football players stooping to sixes due to lack of options for guys.
UVA, USC, and UNC are some of the best colleges to attend in the nation, imo. Solid OCR into banking/ consulting, good academics, sick parties, strong sports, and tons of hot girls.
regarding Princeton - it's a very difficult school. very harsh curves, grade deflation policy (A's are restricted to 20% of class), and they have this thing called senior/ junior thesis, also you are competing against some of the smartest kids in the nation for top grades and top jobs.... it's a lot of pain and work for sure. If I were to start college again today, I would avoid schools like that like a plague
Ya, but right now im not looking to do IB (econ/finance Phd), and Princeton has some of the best economic faculty around.
They are pretty sick though.
Where I'm at now :)
(but in the honors program)
Ecole Normale or Polytechnique for math.
Ecole Polytechnique is probably the only place on earth with less pussy than MIT
And yeah I included Kandahar State in my comparison
Columbia, Cornell, Stanford
Cornell.
Beautiful campus and fun as all hell.
Princeton- International Relations
Harvard- History
I dropped out of Harvard undergrad. If I could do it all over again, I'd go:
1) Yale -- Directed Studies then probably EPE (ethics, politics, and economics) 2) Harvard -- history of science 3) Dartmouth -- history, maybe philosophy
Stanford Princeton UVA
I'll slightly modify the assumptions of the question, and list the schools I could've attended given my stats at the time (attended a top ~15 school that's considered a "semi/non target"... there are only 2 of those I think).
I'm just wondering why Brown is considered to be the worst Ivy League (or so the general consensus is here) yet by selectivity it regularly beats Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia, Penn in terms of its acceptance rate where the other have admissions rates in the teens.
I think it's HYP and the rest in terms of ivy league hierarchy. It's really stupid and lame to try to argue whether brown is better or worse than Dartmouth for instance. I think the problem with brown is that it is unexceptional in most academic fields, has weak STEM compared to other ivies, and has no core curriculum and offers Pass/Fail in all of its classes. Add to this the fact that its admissions is not entirely need blind, and you end up getting a student body that is more "alternative" than other ivies. It also draw a lot of wealthy east coast kids who were not bright enough for HYP and sort of want to coast through college.
I would've gone for:
economics/entrepreneurship at Chicago
Lol, Brown bashing here (though I don't necessarily contend any of the points made)...and WSO continues to get more granular with its prestige rankings... Next week, Y and P will get hated on because they're not H. The following week, H gets hated on because it doesn't produce enough billionaires and US presidents proportional to its "prestige and brand."
Computer Science at Duke. I have this secret dream of being a computer genius, and Duke seems like an awesome mix of prestige and school spirit.
