Melbourne Business School vs CASS Business School

Hi,

I have two competitive offers from Melbourne Business School and CASS in London.
Got admitted to Master of Management (Finance) at MBS and MSc corporate finance at CASS.

Now, the degree at MBS is pretty much a master of finance with two units in strategy. Combination of theory and application through case work, research assignments etc. The school is highly ranked in Asia-Pacific, not sure about the situation in Europe. No working rights in Australia, but full rights in Europe .

The MSc corporate finance at CASS is entirely focused on corporate finance (valuation, finance theory, topics in M&A); financial statement analysis; statistical applications etc. Overall, more applied than the degree at MBS and thought by practitioners rather than academia.

If anyone got experience from either school (as a student or otherwise) and has an idea of IB's and MC's firms school preference in Asia-pacific and in Europe, I would be happy to get that feedback.

Regards,
Christian Loewe

Forgot to mention that I have no internship experience from IB and MC. I would graduate from MBS in December 2015 and have time to complete an internship during the spring 2016 or summer 2016. Alternative, work on landing a internship now, and then enroll at CASS in September (means I would graduate without internship experience from CASS).

If you want to work in Europe, then studying in Australia will be a pain for recruiting. In this case, Cass > MBS. Regardless of the program specifics, you should undertake your masters in the region where you want to work. On a side note, studying in Melbourne sounds pretty sweet to me although I never heard of MBS (or actually any other university in Australia). @"notthehospitalER" probably can give you some insights on recruiting in Australia w/o having the right to work there..

Melbourne us considered one of the best schools in Asia pacific and the best in Australia. To expand on what I said above, there is no formal post MBA type recruiting in Australia (more of a career path rather than two years and out here) and banking is very small (in terms of head count etc) compared to us/Europe. Add in you can't work here legally and it's not looking good. Worst case (but likely) scenario is you study in melbourne, can't get a job in Australia, then recruit for European positions from Australia - sounds unworkable at the worst and really inconvenient at the least. In your scenario, I would go to school on Europe

Thanks @above_and_beyond and @notthehospitalER.

I have no plans to work in Australia, but I intend to work in London or in Singapore, Hong Kong or Indonesia (MBS is ranked 3 in that region). @notthehospitalER, do you know if IB and MC are recruiting graduates from MBS to roles in Asia?

If I go to CASS, I would graduate in September 2016, without any internship experience from IB or consulting. Without intern experience, would I even/still be competitive for graduate roles or internships though I have a degree from CASS? I would miss the summer 2016 intern opportunity.

In this case: BSc + MSc CASS + No internships> BSc+ MBS + internships= For jobs in London?

If I stay at MBS, I will graduate in December 2015 and have a gap (6 months) to do an internship either in Europe or Asia for summer 2016 (alternatively also an off-cycle).

In this case: BSc + MBS + internships (spring & summer 2016)> BSc + CASS + No internships= For jobs in Asia and London?

Conclusion: Going to CASS I will miss intern opportunities in Asia and Europe summer 2016, so I would graduate without experience. From MBS, I would have 6 months before summer 2016 to work on landing internships in Asia or Europe.

MBS is top notch as already explained.

Not having work rights is a huge problem, yes they will recruit from MBS for Asia but you don't have experience or working rights in those countries either. So you are up against it.

What you need to find out is whether MBS provides internships/work experience by way of a subject. It is common in Australia for business schools to have close partnerships with corporates that involve either full blown internships to case competitions and everything in between. You will not be paid in these roles but it is legit CV building.

Your profile currently sounds like 99.9% of the international kids I went to school with. Think about all the small steps to build your profile before you blow your wad on MBB in Hong Kong.

@caribe_mexicano Thanks for you comment. MBS do offer work in form of a subject called Global Business Practicum. Students in groups of 5 spend 10 days in an Asian company, working on solving a problem and then present the findings to management. This would give me relevant experience to add to my resume. Other than that, they offer heaps of strategy case challenges etc. I could make myself more employable by participating in all those extra activities. I would also have time after graduation to land a internship somewhere before and/or during summer 2016. That would not be the case with CASS.

I don't know for sure whether they recruit from MBS for those roles but I would lean towards no given there is no post MBA ib type recruiting here (nt sure about consulting) - your scenarios are purely hypothetical and you're ignoring the possibility that you go to MBS and don't get an internship you want at all, which is also a possibility. The other thins is full time recruiting here is in around march and April so depending on what it's like in Hong Kong etc (not sure what it's like for full time recruiting there but I received a BB s&t offer for a Hong Kong/Singapore summer internship that was recruited for in July, but full time could be different) you may actually not have the experience you want by the time you need it. I'm aware of the global business things you mention and while they're a nice resume builder working at a company for two weeks probably won't get you the job you want.

Finally, keep in mind that Australia doesn't have literal on campus recruiting - companies post their jobs on the career page and everyone applies online, directly on the company website - not sure if this hurts or helps you.

I wouldn't get a degree for the sake of getting one and neither of these sounds ideal for your situation - I would personally forget about more school for a year or two, improve your profile and reapply to better and more suitable programs in a couple of years (eg lbs).

The scenario is that you won't get a decent internship for two reasons: your international, your going to be recruiting before you have time to establish a profile.

Master of management recruits into undergrad roles. I work with one and I know of another who is at MBB Australia.

You need to win the case competitions, not just participate. AT Kearney runs one where you get an internship if you win or an interview not sure.

Also your dates don't make sense.
