Morgan Stanley - Menlo Park / GS TMT - San Francisco

Hi

I was wondering if there was anyone who could shed some light from their experience at Morgan Stanley - Menlo Park and Goldman Sachs - TMT group in San Francisco.
I know both the groups are really strong...Can anyone share any info on the teams / people, culture, Hrs, etc

How would you compare Tech M&A vs Tech coverage groups at Morgan Stanley and similarly...TMT coverage vs TMT M&A at GS - San Francisco.

Any help / advice would be great.

Thanks

Both groups are great.

GS doesn't have a specific "M&A" group, which often hurts their recruiting for those with a strong product interest.

The people at GS are good, alot of homegrown associates/VPs who didn't go to bschool, which makes them bad asses to work for.

MS Tech M&A is the best tech M&A on the group hands down (1/100 would say CS tech M&A) and the M&A group as a whole is #1

MS Tech is argued to be the 2nd best coverage group to only that of GS TMT in SF.

Both groups will work you hard, but the experience you'll get will get you every top tier PE interview. GS is sending 2 to Silver Lake, 1 to KKR, MS is sending people to alot of top shops as well, think KKR, TPG, Blackstone, Carlyle, Silver Lake, has MS representation in 07

Thanks a lot for the advice. By the way ..couple of follow up questions to that -

Q1. Would you say that MS being in Menlo Park - sandHill road is considered to be stronger in Technology ? Q2. How would you compare the compensation (Bonus) for the analysts between GS - San Francisco / MS - Menlo Park ? (approx. numbers will help) Q3. Also...How do most analysts get in touch with the private equity firms you mentioned....is it by having worked on Tech - LBO deals, MS and GS helping place their analysts within these firms or just directly applying to the private equity firms ?

Thanks

CS seems to have a strong Tech M&A team. It does compete on the same level with MS & GS for business and has advised on some landmark Tech deals as mentioned below :

  • Advised Google on its acquisition of You - Tube
  • Advised Private Equity Consortium on the Freescale Semionductor LBO
  • Advised Private Equity Consortium on the Philips Semiconductor LBO
  • Advised ATI on its merger with AMD
  • Advised Internet Security Systems on its sale to IBM
  • Advised McData on its merger with Brocade
  • Advised Infineon Technologies on its Memory Division spin-off through an IPO
  • Advised Micromuse on its sale to IBM
  • Advised Marvell on its acquisition of Intel's Communication Semiconductor Business
  • Advised Pixar on its sale to Disney
  • Advised Jamdat on its sale to EA
  • Advised Scientific Atlanta on its sale to Cisco Systems
  • Advised Hewlett Packard on its acquisition of Peregrine Systems
  • Advised Oracle on its acquisition of Peoplesoft
  • Advised Orbitz on its sale to Cedant
  • Advised Fujitsu on the creation of a JV with AMD for Flash Memory (Spansion)
  • Advised Yahoo on its acquisition of Overture Services
  • Advised Yahoo on its acquisition of Inktomi
  • Advised Linksys on its sale to Cisco
  • Advised Cerent on its sale to Cisco
  • Advised handspring on its sale to Palm

Numerous other deals involving Nortel Networks, Lucent, KLA Tencor, Varian Semiconductor, National Semiconductor, Fairchild Semiconductor, Verisign, Novell, Adobe, C-Cube Microsystems, Synopsys, Siemens, Sybase, Veritas Software, Verifone, Xilinx,Apple, etc

Hence I feel the team has a good reputation in the valley with the companies & VC's.

However I have heard some bad stories about the culture and behavior of the senior management. I am not sure if that is true...It would be great if somebody could confirm or deny that !

I also just got an interview. They're flying me out there though (private jet). Any insights? PM me.

The interviewer I had was pretty chill. I was asked the generic first round questions (ie walk me through your resume, what are the three ways of evaluating a company). If you're going to school in a east coast city, they'll most likely ask you more fit questions to see if you'd really want to go out to California. I remember getting asked if I knew how to drive and if I minded relocating.
