Pass/Fail Basic Finance
Hi, I previously transferred to a semi-target school and this is my first semester there. I am a finance and marketing major, All the courses at the moment are pass/fail optional given the coronavirus situation. As a result, I am considering Pass/Failing Basic Finance. I will likely finish with a B+ or B in the class. Since it's my first semester at the school, this could drastically drop my GPA even though it's not that bad. Without finance, I should have a 3.8-3.9, as I should get A-s or As in my four other classes. With Basic Finance, I anticipate having around a 3.6-3.7. I also have a one credit class that's mandatory to pass/fail if that matters, putting me at 16 credits rather than the usual 15.
My question is whether or not I should pass/fail my finance introduction course. I am torn because even though it's my only finance class thus far and I am a finance major, I figure that it might be more important to have a high GPA. After doing finance for a couple years, I then plan to go to law school if that matters. Any input would be great!
Kind of an interesting question. My initial reaction would be, as I’m almost certain that HR doesn’t look at transcripts beyond i) verifying enrollment / graduation and ii) validating GPA, to take it P / F and protect your overall GPA. That said, if someone does take a closer look, it’s rather strange to be a finance major looking at IB who elected to take “Basic Finance” on a non-graded basis. Can’t imagine there’s much chance of that happening, though.
Regarding law school, don’t really have a view. Assume they take a closer look at coursework and rigor, but can’t imagine one non-letter grade is much of a blip.
Ok, thank you!
I would second this - ending up screwing up a semester in undergrad and was able to do pass/fail to save GPA and never came up from HR besides them confirming Graduation Date/GPA
Same situation with the same class for me. I think it should be justified TBH, especially if it is only that one class. The tradeoff though is, if you indeed only do declare one class P/F, how do you explain why you chose that one specifically?
Exactly, which is why I am confused about what to do.
Let's say you do P/F it and for whatever reason someone asks why that class. What would you say at the moment?
This thinking is why I've decided to go ahead and P/F all of my classes. Think it looks less suss.
Dude people are just happy if you are alive this semester. I wouldn't worry about your grades and nobody will give you shit for this semester. I've spoken with HR at BB and big four- both have said this semester doesn't even count- I'd assume grad schools will just look to see what courses you took but the grades are essentially meaningless
Your assumption of the grad school is groundless. I have first hand knowledge that good grad schools DO look at grades careful. Yes. even in this situation.
You assumption is groundless- there is no precedent because this has never happened before. Anyway, my school is attaching a note on each student's transcript explaining that the semester was interrupted by Covid-19. Other schools are doing this. I dont care anyway but I just had to write this to let you know youre wrong since you are coming at me so intensely for no reason.
A close family friend of mine is on the board of admissions for a very prestigious school's graduate program. I know for a fact every single grade matters, and especially if the course is significant. (finance major, finance course).
These times, although difficult, will seperate you from the pact. You must try for an A, or at least an A-. If you take a pass, you better hope they are sympathetic.
I'm going to get a B+ or B in the class most likely. Do you think it would be better to pass/fail it or leave it as a grade?
