Info on Exits From These Barclays Groups

Hi guys, going through group placement at Barclays and have a few different options on the table. I have a really strong background for PE recruiting and am really keen on doing the best I can after my 2 years. I do believe my individual networking + interview performance will be the ultimate driver for how well I exit for PE, but am still keen on hearing what's likely from the below groups.

- I know NR, P&U, Industrials get talked about a lot on here but found almost 0 on the other groups which I'd love to have more color on

What are potential PE exits like for the following groups (very very little info on WSO):

- Consumer Retail

- Media and Communications (apparently they split up from TMT)

- Tech (and how strong it is vs M&C)

- FIG

Are you actually picking between these 4 groups or did you list a couple more so people wouldn't identify you? I feel like you should have narrowed your choices by now to less than 4, 2 max lol.

Did these 4 groups explicitly tell you that they would rank you #1 at this point? I know some people in each group and I think for, at least a few, they would only have kept talking to you if you told them they were your top choice meaning you told multiple groups they were your top or you're not necessarily deciding between these 4. Just curious

the first one! haha

yes, I've narrowed it down a lot but still have a decent bit of flexibility I'd say for the larger groups (ones not listed and tech). My issue here is finding the right balance e.g. is it worth going for a better all around experience while still being able to exit really well or all out tryhard and get slaughtered for better exits (e.g. Industrials) . But to know this, I need to know how the group would exit that's not (pu, nr, industrials, etc)

Barclays PE exits are generally pretty weak. To optimise your chances, you should clearly go for the top groups, with Industrials probably offering the best overall prospects given the broad focus and the potential for exiting to that team at stronger banks.

For the other mentioned groups, you are probably looking at MM PE at best, except if you are truly an outstanding candidate in which case UMM may be possible.

I would say that is a bit naive to bucket that extremely- it's like saying you went to a non-target so you can't get into banking. Meanwhile like half the people I see in banking are from random schools tbh (and at top PE funds people come from all sorts of places)

I'm more asking for concrete examples of exits if anyone had them (data) or a realist perspective (e.g. you will be fighting from a weak position if you're not in one of the top groups as you compete with people at Barc at top groups + all other banks too ////or////, group won't matter so much as experience will for the next recruiting cycle and being a good analyst so focus on that where you can get good experience)

One current tech/cnr/m&c analyst has a MF buyout offer signed, another has a MF growth offer signed. Keeping moderately anonymous, recruiting is not always smiled upon.

I think cr and mc are legacy Lehman groups (?) and have some high regard in general from that even though I'm sure lots of changes madePersonally know telecom has been super hot post covid for sponsors. Media I have no idea it's probably a ECM DCM machine though but telecom should be good M&a hopefullyFig is solid everywhere and known as more technical, I've seen people from barc fig at a few good shops (some fig specific lie stone point iirc)Tech isn't the best on the street but their exits are pretty solid I think and can't go wrong. I'm positive they do a ton of cap markets stuff and that might be tough to gauge what m&a they're actually doingWould say all the really solid MM shops and UMM. No idea on how MF because I think it's a crapshoot and probably entirely up to you as an individual.

If it were me, I would focus more what industry coverage you like the most and what group you fit best with. You are going to be dedicating essentially your life to that for 2 years. Industry and group fit can make the job much better or much worse. Im not an expert on the exit opps. But I’m sure if you perform well and network well, you’ll have great opportunities.
