Real Estate to IBD

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience completing an internship with a REIT, or REPE, and been able to successfully win a full-time, non-real estate related IBD role? Also, does completing an internship in the real estate field pigeonhole you to real estate, or what is the general perception around RE internships as they relate to transitioning to IBD?
