Resume Review - Junior at Target for IB Summer Analyst

Hi guys,
I've found your resume critiques to be extremely insightful and constructive, so I'd like to ask you guys to tear my resume apart before recruiting begins.

I go to a target school and I'll be applying for Investment Banking Summer Analyst Positions.

I blacked out the companies that I worked at, but I'll just give a quick description for clarity, from top to bottom:
1. Boutique Investment Bank
2. Law Firm (they had an audit department which was where I worked)
3. Publicly Traded Insurance Company

If you'd like additional information, I'll be sure to include it.

Thanks in advance!

Looks pretty solid. Only a few comments.

1) Looks like you have a bit of space at the top from the formatting, decrease the spacing between lines from your name in larger letters and the horizontal line below it, and squeeze in a line or two below your education entry. "Relevant Coursework: Micro..., Macro..., Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance . . . etc." whatever it is you've done. 2) Quantify your Work Experience section with more numbers. You do a good job listing a few, but you should quantify each bullet point. i.e. "Studied more than 20 previous transactions . . ." "Researched 12 private equity firms . . ." Do this with all three experience entries. 3) Remove "onto Excel spreadsheets," when you created the models that's the assumption. If you really want to keep it as a keyword, just say "Created Excel models." Also quantify this, i.e. "27 Excel models." 4) Express your involvement with IAG a bit more, you have three bullets for the virtual thing but two for IAG, with your default member title it almost looks like an afterthought compared to the thing that was your own brainchild. I'm sure you're more involved than the paper shows right now, consider adding a bit more info on how it prepares you or supports your curriculum. If you're running out of space for that, decrease the spacing after the section-separating horizontal lines before the next capitalized sub-heading. 5) Poker/cards is the single most cliche interest. If you're really serious about it leave it on, but so many people use it.

You make great use of white space and the formatting is brilliant, your information is both accessible and attractively presented, great job so far. By the way, do you go to Stern? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to say y/n publicly.

Solid resume. Assuming your school is a target, you should get at least an interview somewhere.

to nitpick, why is your GPA tabbed without a bullet. It's not aligned correctly. also add your SAT score if its 2100+

Overall you've got a solid resume, nice format and fairly well articulated. The previous posters have mentioned most of the smaller missteps, but the big point I would make is regarding most of your experience bullets. While not every bullet needs some results or impact, some should have some sort of substance to show that you did more for the group than learn some stuff, For example,if you are analyzing, what is it for and was it used in a client pitch, etc. For your research, did anything come of it, etc - these are the types of questions you need to ask yourself and then properly articulate those responses in your bullets. Additionally,a few of your bullet points can be cleaned up, but they are pretty solid overall.

I've been away for the weekend so I couldn't respond quickly, but I'd like to thank everyone for help, even Monkey Bone.

A Posse Ad Esse: Yes, I do go to Stern. What gave it away? IAG? I added as many numbers I could have just as you suggested. I took away the awkward extra space between heading and Education. Edited the Excel spreadsheets bullet. I decided to keep the card tricks and poker. I've read a couple books on each leisurely (on top of actually practicing both). Although they've recently taken a backseat so I could try out some new hobbies, explaining the probabilities involved in poker and the amazement on people's faces after the simplest sleight is a common incident in most interviews I've had.

Last Stop: Sadly, my SATs fall just short of 2100. Otherwise, you were right, there was no need to indent the GPA and it has been realigned. Thanks!

BankonBanking: I do see where you are coming from and I wish I could make every bullet point result oriented but since I've stayed at firms for only 3 months each, I haven't had the luxury of time to see what has actually been produced from my efforts (i.e. the Boutique IB hasn't contacted any of the prospects I reviewed yet). However, I did stay in contact with my boss from the law firm which is how I knew that the claims totaled $22 million. Based on your advice, I changed that bullet to "Led a group of 4 interns to analyze royalty claims made by Paramount, Warner Bros., Miramax, and Fox against AMC Loews Theaters and Cleveland Cinemas Management resulting in $22 million of due payments". Better?

Monkey Bone: I was actually considering adding Captain to the Leadership section, but sensing your skepticism as well as my own reluctance as to how others would perceive it, I left it out. However, I did not make this position up and it did require more energy than I expected it to when I signed up. Just dealing with everyone's schedule to come up with a team schedule, the weekly hassle of ensuring at least 5 players showing up, and dealing with all your friends fighting for a spot on the starting 5 was more than I thought. However, you do enjoy a guaranteed starting position and the joy of knowing YOUR OWN team won that game.

General Question to everyone: I got my grades back for the semester, and I took my first two finance classes this fall. Ended up with As, so I officially have a major gpa of 4.0, as it shows up on my transcript. However, it seemed deceiving with only 2 classes so I did a weighted average with my business requirements and calculated a new major gpa to be a 3.87.

Am I being too ambitious if I change my major GPA to a 4.0?

A Posse Ad Esse: 1. Nice, I studied abroad in Florence, too. I would be delighted to give you suggestions about studying abroad. Just PM with questions and I'll be as in depth as possible. I'll start off by saying, no one's joking when its the greatest time of your life, easy 4.0, you'll make a ton of non-Stern friends (always nice to have a diverse friend pool), and don't bother thinking you'll get with Italian women (sadly, I haven't met a single guy able to do that). Italian guys get with American chicks, but it doesn't work the other way around. However, plenty of American fish in Italy's sea. Horrible metaphor, but whatever... 2. I'll be sending applications through OCR this week, but none thus far. 3. I do have room too add one more line for IAG, but I have no idea what to add. I feel like the first line I have encompasses my main takeaways. Got any ideas? Please PM me about that.

Keep it at 3.87. All classes in the Stern core will count towards your major, so your GPA is comprised of all those, not simply your finance coursework. And to be frank, it's already high enough. You're cumulative is 3.7+ and your major is almost a 3.9, you have blown the GPA requirement out of the water. It's basically a screening tool for HR if you didn't network and get past their screening, at this point it's about your leadership, ECs, involvement, and how well you perform in interviews.

I'll PM you about Florence. Good luck with OCR.
