Travel Laptop for Work
I'm thinking of getting a travel laptop for work. About a year ago, I had purchased a lower-end and thinner Lenovo Thinkpad before thinking that it just needed enough computing power to remote in to my work computer, but that turned out to be a disaster. Its computational power was so low it struggled to perform even basic operating system functions.
Any recos? Is Lenovo (Thinkpad) still the go-to workhorse notebook? Preference for slimmer and lighter.
I have a Thinkpad w a 2.4GHz i7 processor and 8 gigs of RAM - gets the job done quickly
Not so slim though but fairly light
thinkpads have always served me well, would probably get another when i upgrade
We use Dell Latitude E5450s at work and I don't have many complaints about them.
TorontoMonkey1328 the ASUS Zenbook is fantastic and light weight (SSD drive and i5) and can be found here:

It was on sale for $799 so wait around if you're not in a hurry and see if the deal comes back. Also check out Slickdeals.net for the latest deals submitted by users.
lenovo x1 carbon or Dell xps 13 /
If you want to drop some $$$ the HP Spectre x360 is amazing. i7 w/ 8GB of RAM - works great.
Do you actually own this? I saw this too and it looked super sweet, but ever since HP bought Compaq back in 2001 I've never really trusted their computers.
Regular HP is shite, but it looks to me like whoever built the Spectre took a leaf outta the boys from the Envy/VoodooPC side of things. Have some friends who own 'em and they're pretty sweet.
Yeah I just got it. Runs pretty well, extremely light couldn't be happier with it.
i7 master race
If this is for work, I would avoid anything with the Intel M processors. Although they result in a thinner profile laptop, it is at the expense of a proper cooling system and will get laggy. I have a Dell Latitude E7470 provided by work and it runs nice, granted its not the sexist thing going.
Just get one of the latest thinkpads, no brainer...T460, T450s, X260
My bank gives out X1 Carbons and I really like mine. Super fast and pretty thin / light. Only thing is you'll need to remap one of the keys to serve as right click. Switched out my PrtSc key for that.
+1 for thinkpad. Just in case you missed the other 50 comments on how great Lenovo's are.
+1 on the Thinkpad. I got a T440s in 2014 that has been flawless. I'll be getting another T4XXs on my next upgrade.
I'm not a fan of the X1 keyboard or track pads. Also the lack of an RJ145 port (Ethernet) sucks when you're in hotels with crap wifi.
If your IT group gives you a hard time, skimp on the processor and make sure you go PCI ssd and a shitload of ram.
We have the Spectre's and T460's at work, either is a great work laptop.
HP Elitebook 840 with 16GB RAM, super light super fast
Avoid anything that has AMD unless you want your house to start on fire.
My work provided me with one, an X1 Carbon from Lenovo. I'm pretty happy with it.
Anyone use one of the higher end surfaces? I know it's technically a tablet but you can get the full office suite on there and they are definitely built for travel
Lenovo got rid of a lot of features on the newer ThinkPads, naturally pissing off a lot of longtime users. They're still awesome machines though and there has been speculation about a retro ThinkPad in 2017 for the 25th anniversary.
Using a MacBook currently. Remote desktop works great. I have Bootcamp installed to allow me to use windows.
IMO I think a laptop is something to spend the extra $$$ to get something nice. I think you should get a $2k laptop with an i7, you'd have a pretty sick computer that would be amazingly fast. Avoid apple like the plague.
I bought Dell Latitude E7470 two months ago. Latitude is Dell's business grade line. Light, durable, 10-12 hours of battery life, 1080p IPS screen, i7, 16gb RAM, 256 GB SSD - ridiculously fast and nice to use. Keyboard and trackpad are also very good. Highly recommend. Cost me about $1.1-1.2k.
Honestly I think the Macbook Air has been my favorite travel computer. Super lightweight, 13in screen is pretty good for doing a lot of things, great battery life, solid state drive, still the best trackpad, can be had for the low 1000s.
Obviously if you're doing anything in excel I wouldn't use a mac, even with a VM running windows, but aside from Excel, I think macs do most basic things better.
Outside of that, if you're going PC, The X1 carbon I had was decent and I still like the old T400 series Lenovos.
